Ochomma, a famed warrior and knife fighter in Umuejia, is astounded by the sudden turn of events after a coup and a counter coup. First Mazi Adiche's son arrives from the north, dead on arrival. As the days go by, more bodies arrive from the north, causing a stir in the village. This sets off a cataclysm that pushes the country to the brink of collapse. A civil war begins and the country fights a bitter war. The rudest shock comes when jets bomb a market for the first time, leaving behind panic and pain. His son, Chibuike, escapes attempts to recruit him as a child-soldier. As the war drags to an end, the body count in the family mounts. Haunted by his accidental killing of his brother, and the loss in war of his soldier-cousin Iroegbulam, Ochomma is driven over the precipice.
