A couple has been left distraught after the grand mother of their week-old daughter brought her life to a tragic end while circumcising her without the consent of the couple.

Mr. James Igbaji, residing at Ikot Ansa, Calabar, whose wife, Molly Igbaji, gave birth to their first daughter, Eunice, on 20 June, invited his mother from the village to Calabar to assist in taking care of the new born baby since their domestic servant was writing her third term exams.

However, when the woman came, she planned to circumcise the girl, a common practice in the northern part of the state.

“The afirst day he arrived here, she asked me if the girl had been circumcised. When I told her no, she then asked when we were prepared to do it.

“When I told her we didn’t intend to do it, she screamed in amazement and declared that it was an abomination if we failed to do it,” Molly, mother of the girl, told P.M.News at their home.

According to the distraught lady, she thought that with her explanation that women ought not undergo circumcision, her mother in-law would let the issue be.

She said she did not know that she had the intention of circumcising the girl in their absence.

“On Friday, after my husband had gone to work, I went to the market to buy some ingredients with which to prepare food. That was when Mama Ogeyi sent a neighbour to buy her a razor blade. With it she sliced the private part of my daughter and the baby began to bleed and scream.”

She said when the scream became too loud and persistent, neighbours came in to find the girl in “terrible condition”. She said as they made to rush her to the hospital for treatment, the baby died on the way.

“Before they could come back my husband’s mother had packed her bags and gone away.

“My husband has been too angry to find out if she went to the village or elsewhere,” Molly said.

The matter she said, has been reported to the police but added that arresting the woman would be tantamount to double trouble for the family as they would still be the ones to bear the cost of bailing her.

This is a cruel and stupid practise that is complete abuse. The only result is a woman has no pleasure in relations with her husband or the man can be a lazy man who just climbs on as she has no idea what is missing.

Female circumcision is best done in hospital if it must be done.
