The Frenchman has responded to Fifa
president Sepp Blatter's recent comments,
agreeing that more African and Asian teams
should play in the competition
Uefa president Michel Platini has suggested
that the World Cup should be expanded to 40
teams to include more Asian and African
representatives, starting from 2018 in Russia.
Sepp Blatter has already stated that he wants
more non-European teams at the World Cup
and Platini agrees with the Fifa chief that it
would be fruitful to have more African and
Asian sides at the finals, although feels the
best solution would be to expand the
competition rather than to take away places
from Europe.
"I totally agree with Sepp Blatter that we need
more African and Asian teams. It would be
good for everybody," Platini told The Times.
"But instead of taking away some European
spots, we have to expand to 40 teams.
"For example, we can add two African, two
Asian, two American, one Oceania and one
from Europe."
Europe currently hold 13 of the 32 World Cup
spots, whereas Africa have to settle for five
places and Asia for four or five, depending on
whether they qualify via a play-off against a
South American team.
The World Cup was expanded from 24 to 32
teams in 1998 after a previous expansion from
16 to 24 in 1982.

I think if anything, i agree with Platini. Europe still dominates football and it won't make sense to take away their spots and give to Africa and Asia. Instead the number of teams at the world cup should be increased. I can't wait for Platini to become the next FIFA president. Blatter should be ready to hand over to him.

Yes Platini is right.
The 13th best team in europe is better than d 5th best team in Africa.Common sense.
Yes Africa needs more representative in d world cup but that shouldn't be at d detriment of d european slots.

Abeg, it will make the world cup more competitive and open. Teams should play more games thereby reducing luck.

I also thing FIFA should make a rule that makes sure the countries in UK and Ireland should take turns to go to the world cup. England can't keep going to the world cup at the detriment of Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland and even Rep of Ireland. Why's their team not even called Great Britain like it is when it's dominated by Scotland. These English people are just selfish. They don't want to share their glory with their fellow country men.

Are you suggesting a quota system there?Those who goes to the world cup are the ones that qualifies,remember.Not that i actually give fvck about fifa or world(oyinbo schemes).

I have tried to find out how western nigeria can join fifa. i I know we can from their website. I know the canada professional league, you can send this boys to play here. I found out about that one.


i will love to see us play in the next world cup. fifa website does not say much.

Agreed. I especially feel for the Asians who haven't had the chance to show their stuff. I hope Platini's wish is granted.

keshi may look mean in the select of the national team but, he knows his history that nigeria is 3. that why he refuse to play in the north just to upset them.
