Solo Rappers With 5 Or More Platinum Albums by kay29000(m): 12:30pm On Oct 30, 2013
I think a lot of rappers are a flash in the pan nowadays. In short, I think most rappers that have come in the game through the years have had very little staying power. After their first 2 or 3 albums that are successful, they start to fall off into oblivion. So, I have decided to give credit to rappers that have been able to stay relevant enough to have at least 5 platinum albums.

I know people are going to say album sales shouldn't be a criteria for how good a rapper is. But, my theory is that, if you are a gimmick, or just a fad for the moment, there is no way you are going to sell a million copies 5 times...people are always 'on to the next' hottest gimmick out by the 2nd album. So, the people I am going to be listing below deserve an applause.

Honorary mentions include Ja Rule with 4 platinum selling albums.

Whoa! All Jay Z's albums are platinum. All 12 of them. And it's funny that his first two albums didn't sell much. His second album didn't even go Gold, till he dropped Vol. 2...and everything started selling afterwards. As Napoleon Hill said in his the great book, Think and Grow Rich- 'Those who have cultivated the HABIT of persistence seem to enjoy insurance against failure. No matter how many times they are defeated, they finally arrive up toward the top of the ladder." There is nothing like luck here."

Like Nas said on that 'Classic' track with Kanye, Rakim, and KRS1- 'Oh you went platinum, yeah that's nice/Now let me see you do the same thing twice/Three times, four times, then a couple of mo' times.' A lot of people clown Rick Ross for never going platinum, but at least all his albums are Gold. He has 5 albums in 7 years, and his sales with all of them are consistent...between 500-800k...every time. I think that is better than someone that sold 10 million copies individually with his first two albums, but couldn't sell one million with his fourth album.

I respect everyone on the list above, cos it takes a lot to go Platinum 5 times in a rap career. For those that don't know what 'platinum' means, it is a certification given to albums that sell more than a million copies. In the last 5 years in Hip Hop, the only rapper close to achieving 5 plat studio albums is Drake. He has released three albums (Thank Me Later, Take Care, and Nothing Was the Same) since 2010, and all of three of them are plat. even in the last 10 years, the only rappers that have come on the scene that have multiple platinum selling albums are 50 Cent with 3, Young Jeezy with 3, and Drake with 3.

Because their albums went platinum doesn't necessarily mean they're the greatest rappers. Most of those rappers are even the worst rappers of all time and some of them are average at best, hence you should change your topic to albums that went platinum because clueless people ran to stores like headless chickens based on hype created by the media and the crap the radio feeds them because they can't decide for themselves what to listen to. If they could decide for themselves then they would know that there's alot of talented rappers out there which are way better than the crap you just listed but unfortunately those talented rappers don't get the recognition and their albums don't go platinum. Cruel, cruel world if you ask me, the world is run by teenagers! *sad*

I am guessing you are a fan of Immortal Technique. He is the one that feeds this theory to his fans. Of cos he is a d.ope rapper, but there are a lot of d.ope rappers that can't make good songs, and he is one of them. There is a difference between having something to say, and having the skills to present in a creative way to people. Are you trying to say Nas, DMX, Eminem, Tupac, Jay Z are wack rappers? Because they can relate to a lot more people without losing their essence doesn't mean you should hate on them.

4. Too Short
5. Lil' Wayne
6. LL Cool J
7. Ja rule
8. 50 Cent
9. Young Jeezy

Where did you see Young Jeezy, Ja Rule, 50 Cent, and Drake on the list? If you are questioning whether LL Cool J and Too Short are good, it shows you know very little about Hip Hop history. You probably started listening to rap music in the 2000s. List 5 rappers you feel are good.

you did say ja rule and the rest deserved honorary mention in your list for having accomplished almost 5 platinum albums, read your original post again. And if you think ll cool j and too short are the dopest of rappers then you have so much to learn.

Coming from someone who thinks lil' wayne, kanye west, ja rule, rick ross and drake are even rappers. You were pretty much talking about yourself there, i can tell.

Since you asked for my best 5:
1. Immortal Technique
2. Krs-One
3. R.A The rugged Man
4. Pharoahe Monch
5. Diabolic

Your list is garbage anyway. No matter which way you look at it.
Are you trying to say Nas,
DMX, Eminem, Tupac, Jay Z are wack
rappers? Because they can relate to a lot
more people without losing their essence
doesn't mean you should hate on them.
For instance analysing the five rappers you singled out you listed 12 jay z albums but only two deserve platinum status, i.e reasonable doubt and blueprint, end of, the rest are trash. All snoop dogg's albums are trash and if you so much so as even listen to rhythm and gangster you will be proving how dumb you are. Nastradamus too don't deserve to be on that list. eminem last three albums also shouldn't be on that list unless if you think relapse and recovery are great rap albums and dmx, oh my, please don't tell me you mentioned dmx. Only his first two albums are platinum material but the rest belong in the trash can. So mr you get one strike for your list, 2strikes for saying immortal technique lacks creativity in creating music, 3strikes for listening to the radio

You could have said: ''are you a fan of immortal technique?'' and i would have openly said ''yes'' instead of asking me to list you 5 rappers when you know you're looking for one name. You've lost the battle. now go create a new hip hop list, and a real hip hop list this time, then we can talk. i can tell you now realize how trash your list is, you just hate to admit it.

Y'all both are good hiphop heads. But I think RSA kinda got the list wrong but he does have a great point. I'm a fan of most of the rappers in the op's list but I think some names don't deserve to be in that list, there are other rappers that I'd slot in if I made that list.

Btw. . . . Yo RSA, I just started listening to immortal tech fully just 2 months ago and men I can back up ur argument anyday anytime. Immortal Tech is a source of knowledge. Revolutionary 2 is filled with rage of knowledge.

You guys are getting me all wrong- my favourite rappers are Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Big Pun (RIP), j.cOLE, Talib kweli...but, my post is about 'rappers with more than 5 platinum albums.' The list isn't about the most lyrical rappers in the game. I really don't like how RSAMAN came with the abusive comment. If you want to make a point, you don't have to come off negative.

@op , good list. the op was just putting it out there for viewers to know rappers who have 5 or more platinum albums to their name and more so nobody needs to get infuriated as the op clearly stated his point and to you who are claiming immortal rubbish , why didn't this people have platinum albums to their name -i guess it is because they are wack , if they are that good people would listen to them.

I have no respect for anybody who say Relapse is trash though, goes to show one thing. . . . . They follow the crowd and can't make their own opinion. I know next thing they will be like 'Even Eminem trashed Relapse', yeah, same way he trashed Recovery. He is just feeding you guys what you need to hear. I for one think Relapse is a Sick sick album. It has a twisted, Psycho theme and not many people want to listen to that, especially close minded conscious hiphopheads. But if you really open your mind, U may get to really appreciate it.

@op Nice, Nice List, everyone there deserves to be there. They may or may not be the greatest but it takes a lot of hardwork to get to a point where you can sell 1m copies, 5 times. I am not a big Drake fan, but i think he'll get to 5 platinum album soon, he seems to have understood the market, Nothing Was the Same is Platinum already.

And yes, Immortal Technique has to be one of the greatest conscious MC ever, he's good at educating and revealing some deep shii in his music, and i am a big fan. But it is also true that he cannot consistently creates good Rap Music, there is a Big big difference between making d.ope rap records and making good rap Music. People like Jay Z, Eminem, Kanye etc mastered the art of doing both that is why they are as successful as they are. So i dont really subscribe to the school of thought that the Best rap MUSIC are not on radio or not popular, because they are mostly are. The ones who just try to sell their MCing skills only are the ones who get relegated to the underground.

But in the end, it all depends on what you enjoy listening too. Because one is a fan of mainstream music doesnt necessarily make him dumber than one that listen to underground joints, its just what he enjoys. I listen to mainstream Rappers, I also listen to underground rappers. My playlist ranges fro, Eminems to Jays and Yes, to J. Cole and Kendrick and Slaughterhouse and Ab Soul, to Hopsin, KR, Skyzoo, Pharoah Monche, to Immortal tech to the Roots to Kweli, Chubby Jagz, Nipsey Hustle, to Rick Ross and Wale and Meek. It just depends on my mood. It doesnt make me more or less smarter than anyone who listen to underground or mainstream music, it is just what they enjoy.

Then you are not a hip-hop head. You are liberal like me. Core hip-hop heads dismiss commercial rap in its entirety.

And why is most songs on MMLP2 with features? The album will sell cause it has several poppy songs but it is obviously a weak album with some memorable songs with "Headlights" standing out. I seem to feel a bit relaxed at the moment with Kendrick and A$AP Rocky's last year album GKMC and LLA.

u say most? Well, its not most songs, and i dont really see anything wrong in having features on an Album. The album's total length should be about 90mins(Deluxe tracks included), and Eminem is Rapping in more that 80% of that time, thats enough Eminem in an Album if you ask me.

Then again people have started calling MMLP2 weak again, simply because they compare it to MMLP. I think its weaker than MMLP but its not weak at all, it a 4mics album at least. A couple of songs on there can stand with the best of Eminem. 'Bad Guy' is Genius, a sequel to Stan, without losing it thrills, not many can pull that off. Rhyme or Reason, Brainless, Baby, Headlights, Evil Twin, all these songs can stand toe to toes with the best of Eminem's works, so i dont see how it is 'Weak'. Granted there are a couple of Poppy songs meant for the radio, but that has always been Eminem, he likes being in the Media.

Monster, Stronger than i was, Bezserk and Survival, are the only poppy songs on MMLP2. having a female take a hook doesnt exactly makes the song a pop song. There is nothing Pop about Legacy or Bad Guy or AssHole or Beautiful Pain.

I think, MMLP2 is the best project Eminem has dropped since the Eminem Show. Just play 'Rap God' again.

Relapse is trash pal. I'm glad i didn't buy it but a friend of mine gave a burnt copy to me, if i had bought that pile of junk i would devise plans to get my money back. I couldn't get into it, it took me about two years to listen to the whole album and still couldn't get into it. To even think this album is great in the slightest, proves you haven't heard the greatest rap albums out there, they are there you just have to know where to look and you would stop praising such mediocrity. And i was not going to bring this up but now that you mentioned it, i'm not going by the fact that em trashed his own album pal, that album was trash and finally em realized and admitted it's trash, not that he told us but he admitted what we already knew, which is really hard for someone to realize that their own work is trash and even harder to admit to the public. I guess you were baffled when you heard eminem trahed his own album because you thought that ish was gold, i can imagine the look on your face. To you he was telling but to us real hip hop-heads who already knew that album was the trash, he was only admitting. Goes to show how people like you will praise any album with eminem's name on it even if he just farts through-out the entire album, the same way you are drooling over the pop poo that's streaming on the radio right now.

turn off the radio pal. There are hundreds of rap albums that are miles better than half of the crap that's on that list but those albums didn't even sell hundred thousand copies let alone a million copies pal. Like i said great rap albums are there, you just have to know where to look. The fact that an album sold most copies doesn't mean it's the best, if we go by that logic then macarena is the best dance in the world, infact most albums on that list are the worst hip hop albums.

Name any album by lil' wayne, drake, rick ross, kanye west, t.i that is better than the following albums:

q-tip - the renaissance
apollo brown and o.c - trophies

just two of those albums, and they didn't even sell as much as those pile of crap by those artists on that list.

it doesn't take hardwork this days pal. It's takes luck, flooding the radio with your crap, wear chainz, gold teeth, calling women hoes, making stupid music videos, some catchy idiotic and childish rhymes that don't make any sense and some generic crap beats. apparently the masses consisting mostly of clueless teens who are brainwashed into thinking everything this phony rappers represent is cool are craving these talentless pop rappers' crap they keep feeding them.

I am not a
big Drake fan, but i think he'll get to 5
platinum album soon, he seems to have
understood the market, Nothing Was
the Same is Platinum already.

yes he understood the market, apparently 95 percent of his albums are bought by white teenage suburban teenage girls who think the said albums are the greatest based on drakes looks and not the music itself.

eh? Let's see...

Started... Zombie on the track...
[Chorus:]
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now my whole
team fucking here
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team here, nigga
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now my whole
team here, nigga
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team fucking here
[Verse 1:]
I done kept it real from the jump
Living at my mama's house we'd argue
every mornin'
Nigga, I was trying to get it on my own
Working all night, traffic on the way home
And my uncle calling me like "Where ya at?
I gave you the keys told ya bring it right
back"
Nigga, I just think it's funny how it goes
Now I'm on the road, half a million for a
show
And we...
[Chorus:]
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now my whole
team fucking here
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team here, nigga
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team fucking here,
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team here nigga
[Verse 2:]
Boys tell stories about the man
Say I never struggled, wasn't hungry, yeah, I
doubt it, nigga
I could turn your boy into the man
There ain't really much I hear that's poppin'
off without us, nigga
We just want the credit where it's due
I'm a worry about me, give a Bleep about you
Nigga, just as a reminder to myself
I wear every single chain, even when I'm in
the house
Cause we...
[Chorus:]
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now my whole
team fucking here
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team here, nigga
[Bridge:]
No new niggas, nigga we don't feel that
Bleep a fake friend, where you real friends
at?
We don't like to do too much explaining
Story stays the same I never changed it
No new niggas, nigga we don't feel that
Bleep a fake friend, where you real friends
at?
We don't like to do too much explaining
Story stay the same through the money and
the fame
Cause we...
[Chorus:]
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now my whole
team fucking here
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team here, nigga
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now my whole
team here, nigga
Started from the bottom now we're here
Started from the bottom now the whole
team here nigga

That couldn't have been hard to come up with pal. Infact if you put five monkeys in a room and asked them to write lyrics they might come up with those lyrics pal.

@op, I wonder why Nelly is not there. The list is not that of greatest rappers or best rappers. You even have an r&b artist(Drake) there.

You can't hear that his songs are trash, right? Well they are. Heavy Emotions? Give me a break. Soft voice? Probably one of the features females are falling over and makes them think his even cuter, Go to amazon dot com and you will see most his albums got a 5 star rating from reviews by people who said: ''drake you're a honey; drake will you marry me; drake i could cuddle you; drake you're so cute'' than talk about his music at all. Anyway we were talking about rap but unfortunately drake ain't rap at all, period.

tnx for giving me more evidence to buttress my point.u see,i could call a monkey 'cute' and dat wont be because of its outstanding natural beauty but as a result of an action it carried out. Ladies love drake's style of rap because it is not at all hardcore(something new i must say)...i'm so sorry op for my contribution in trying to derail ur thread which every educated and un-blind(excuse my french) human can see states clearly 'rappers who have 5 albums that have gone platinum' and not 'hi world, lets discuss the junk we all listen to and call rap then go ahead and bully everyone else who doesnt agree with our bad taste' *drops mic*
