Cassava Farming:An Untapped Goldmine For Unemployed Graduate. by SeyiIdris: 10:34am On Nov 06, 2013
Nigerian cassava production is by far the largest in the world; a third more than production in Brazil and almost double the production of Indonesia and Thailand. Cassava production in other African countries, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda appears small in comparison to Nigeria’s substantial output. Nearly 90% of cassava production in Nigeria is for domestic food production and produced by smallholder farmers. Production yields are still extremely low and Nigeria could easily double its production.

it is true
cassava is a food crop and a hectare of cassava is about 9 tons and a ton is sold between #25k to #30k here in delta state. cost of production is like this.
land clearing and bush fire in dry season = 12000
cultivation by tractor = 10000
cassava stems (300*25) at least = 7500
labour (planter) = 4000
weeding (3 times b4 harvest chemical weeding ) 15000
total = #48500
revenue 25000*9 ton = 225000
income (225000-48500)=#176500
note the buyer pays for uproot of the cassava here in delta state.
all these can be achieve with hard labour and determination.

What about the following?
1. cost of renting the land
2. cost of making ridges
3. fertilizer
4. others
at the end of the day, what you will spend will not be less than 70k

Mr man, we are talking of 30 tons per ha with varieties like TME419 and you are talking of 9 tons. Don't send us back to the 1950s with your wrong and obsolete information.

Even with high yield stem, we could have 40tonnes/ha and there is a farm in oyo state dat buys for 17k/tonnes so revenue for a ha would be =N=680,000

The estimates are very wrong. It takes approximately 110,000 to cultivate a hectare of cassava in order to achieve a yield of 25 to 30 tons per hectare. This has been dealt with exhaustively on other threads on the subject.

I wonder why people would come here to provide figures that have no basis. If someone were to use them to take a loan, trouble is what will wait on the other end.

Those estimates ain't in line at all!
Come to think of it, if 1 ton of cassava goes for 25k and say I buy 4 that is 100k then i spend an average of 50k on processing and other logistics to produce 1 ton of garri then, ao much will I be making as profit? Brother, that is pure loss!
Garri production is very profitable and in high demand. You can get a detailed feasibility report on mechanised garri processing today. Call 08139444430 .
