I will take this really slow; this article is going to be long and I don't want to bore you.
Ready?
Oya, let's go...
Most of us have a wrong notion of what been rich is, I used to have this same notion too...anybody who drives a big car and lives in a big house is rich.
Right?
Nah - wrong, at least not in all cases.
I want this article to change perspectives so read very carefully.
What you have does not make you rich, it is what you have that gets you other things you want that does.
Alright, let me break it down. Most people think in terms of spending, they always want to get a new jewery and buy new clothes. I make those mistakes too; I remember how I spent the first money I made from a business I ran - I had always wanted a DVD so I used the money I made to get a DVD and voom - the money went.
The way rich men think is quite different; they make money, use the profits to buy something else that will give them more money before they buy that 'toy' they want only when their investment can 'comfortably' get them the toy without feeling like it means much.
There is this man I know who has a chain of schools in Enugu. I remember when he first started his first school. He was making considerable money but he appeared stingy. We used to laugh at his kids then; he drove this old volkswagen and we all felt he could afford a better car, they lived in a funny looking house and at that time we felt he could get a better house. Growns up laughed at him too, everybody felt he was such a stingy man. The last time I heard of him he rides a bentley and lives in a big house. the growns up that laughed at him when we were little still lives in the same house they laughed at him from.
The thing is this: Poor minds think spending, rich minds think investing. We are all guilty, you work your ass off as a barman in a hotel and the next day after you get paid - you buy shirts and trousers and shoes. the money vanishes, we go back to working and the cycle starts all over again. Been rich is not how you are perceived, big cars is not riches - it is big investments that is. We buy clothes and look all "swagged up"...that doesn't mean you are rich. Have you ever seen people who people call "money miss road", they have properties and still drive that same old car...they are wise, they give up present gratification for future 'absolute' financial freedom. I'm not saying you should be miser just that whenever you want to spend that money next time ask yourself this:
1. Is it necessary for me to buy this or I'm I getting it just to influence the way I'm perceived by people.
2. Which is better; spend this and loose the money or invest it and get it back so I can 'spend comfortably' later.
Like my mentor, Robert Kiyosaki, will say - The best thing to spend your money on are Assets and not liabilities. Assets are what brings in money into your pocket after you have spent on it. On the other hand, Liabilities are what takes money out without returning money back.
Have a great day! Cheers!
