Yesterday I was surfing the web and my
computer turned off all of a sudden. Today I try and boot it up and after the Fugitsu BIOS the screen goes blank with the blinking cursor in the upper left. I cannot get to any Windows XP screen.
I hope I wont have to can do a clean install (Format), beacause I would rather not
lose all my important files as I have no back up for them. I have looked around on the web and could not find
a definitive answer.

Anyone with help on hw to fix this problem?

Where are the engineers pls. This same thing is happening to my system(windows7). The light indicating that cpu is working is on(full). Maybe i should create my own thread.

Ok. You guys should tap F8 when the system is booting up. If it loads and displays the safe mode options . Select safe mode and enter to window. Restart and you are fine. If it however doesn't work. Do an hard disk by entering the bios. I.e pressing f2 or del or f10 depending on your model.

computer if it is not already
connected.

Also are you sure you did press the f8 button. Its a single button o. Not pressing f and 8 o.

Yes i did the f8 thing and it dint pop up anything........... The set up on mine is by pressing f2.... The main menu which are listed upward are sysinfo, advanced, security, boot, exit. Under the boot, there is boot device priority, numlock, touch pad mouse, internal lan, pxe oprom....... Entering the boot priority order, there is sata cd, sata hdd, usb cd, usb fdd, usb hdd, network............. There is nothing like all those things you listed above........ And thanks for ur attentiveness. Any other help you can render?

Samsung notebook. Model:NP300E5A. It came wt windows7 starter. Afraid of non genuine windows so i haven't upgrade.

Check under the advanced tab in the bios. There's hard disk test there. Also you have to hold the f8 key while the system is booting for safe mode to load.

The f8 thing isn't working. It has no effect and i dont know why.... Maybe you should tell me the last option i can fall back to. I dont mind losing my file anyway. I can get them back.

just navigate through all the links on the bios. You should find any link with diagnostic or tests. Also try f11. I guess thats for recovery mode in windows seven. Let me ask. Do you have an external cd or dvd rom?

yea. I have an external dvd rom plus i use the recovery disk(of thesame system type but not the one that actually came with mine) to do a system repair for it. But still no noticeable changes.

go Get a windows 7 cd and get back here when you have it.. Shouldn't cost more than 150 naira.

ok. You mean something like reinstalling another OS right? I expected such anyway. Thanks for ur help so far. I'm in a small town now and i dont think there is any competent computer engineer here. I switched on the laptop this morning(just for switching sake). It just got stucked on the first page. Even the BIOS did not load. But carefully i could hear a soft cracking sound. I traced the sound to the hard drive. I removed the compartment(just a screw) and unplugged its cable. So now on restart, the BIOS loads very well and no cracking sound. I tried it multiple times to be very sure. From this, i guess the hard drive is bad. Or what do u think?

Yes. The hdd is culpable. Seems its failing but with the ticking sounds coming from it seems like a physical damage. Hdd are very fragile and simple shifting while it work on high speed can be a big problem. You need to get another.

i just got back to my base today. I took it to a samsung care shop. I lodged my complain, filled a form and they collected it from me. They said they're gonna contact me. I think they're going to repair it for me cos it's still under warranty......... Thanks again for everything. I'll inform you when i get it back.
