Daily Manna: Victory Is Sure

Monday 25, November 2013

TEXT: JUDGES 1:16-36

KEY VERSE: “And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah” (Judges 1:17).

In the days when colonialism was in vogue, countries that were conquered were overrun by the superior powers of the colonialists. No country has ever been taken over without a battle.

Most times, freedom does not come on a platter of gold; it is fought for. Although the children of Israel had been promised a good land - Canaan that flowed with milk and honey as an inheritance - they needed to fight to have the promise realised. After the death of Joseph, Israel asked the Lord who would go before them, and God said Judah should lead them. There was a large expanse of land to be inhabited, but the Canaanites were already living there. This presented a fresh challenge. In the text, God empowered Israel against the Canaanites. There were engaging collaborations between Judah and his brother Simeon in forging a common front against their enemies. They were thus able to rout the Canaanites that were occupying Zephath.

A lesson for believers here is that there must be unity of purpose. In unity, a lot can be achieved. Judah may not have been able to defeat the Canaanites had he decided to fight it all alone. Again, we learnt that since the Lord was with Israel, even the tribes that did not completely drive out the inhabitants of the portions allotted to them were able to subdue such inhabitants and made them servants.

Believers are enjoined to always put their trust in the Almighty God. There’s no situation too difficult that God cannot handle. All we need do is to follow His instructions to the minutest detail. Whatever He allows to dwell among us cannot overcome us. He gives us the power to subdue such things in such a way that they pose no threat to us after all.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God is still the Man of war, the Captain of our host.
