Man u's academy whooped pompey playing at full strength, if not wayward finishes by eagles and campbell, it would have been embarassing. United will destroy pompey come 10th of August

POMPEY IN THE BLOOD

John Westwood says he is 45 going on 16 and it is not difficult to understand why.

John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood in his unique Pompey costume.

For one, the Portsmouth-based football fan (fanatic?) leaves no one in doubt as to the club he supports.

During match days, he stands out for his weird dress sense, or lack of it. Because, whatever the weather, John is in his boxer shorts, a waistcoat, which has no buttons, and a top hat that stretches towards the skies.

Everything is painted in Portsmouth‘s blue and white and John is always a spectacle. A moving, breathing spectacle that follows Pompey everywhere in the world and was in Abuja for the inaugural Tinapa Invitational Soccer Fiesta, which held on Saturday and Sunday at the National Stadium.

“My family says I‘m crazy because of the way I‘ve been supporting my club. They could be right because at times I feel I‘m not right in the head, maybe I’m 16 mentally,” he said, a cigarette dangling in his right hand, as people passed and paused to behold the show right at the entrance of the Transcorp Hilton.

Some even cut into this interview to take pictures with the heavily tattooed mobile Portsmouth billboard. John was game, making funny faces and posing in various ways.

Perhaps, John‘s family was willing to tolerate his bizarre way of showing support without complaining. That is if it was limited to him appearing half naked in the full glare of the public and leaving his day job to follow Pompey around the globe as the unofficial mascot.

But John, who is regarded as Portsmouth‘s number one fan, opened a new phase in the art of supporting a club when he changed his name.

“I became, officially, in 1999 John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood and my family just gave up on me. They couldn‘t believe I could go to such lengths, but nobody can understand my love for this club.

“It‘s the only club I‘ve ever supported and I became a fan when I was 11. Portsmouth FC is my life and that‘s why it has to reflect in my documents. I just had to do the name change,” he said.

Supporting Portsmouth is indeed John‘s life. He has not missed a single Pompey game in 20 years, regardless of wherever the match is taking place.

There is this story of one match he almost missed in Hong Kong. It was one of those games many fans would see as a not-very-meaningful pre-season friendly and would not bother much about.

Definitely not Mr. Portsmouth Football Club Westwood.

According to one account, John and friends, Paul Allen, 31, and Andy Walshe, 30, were supposed to travel to Hong Kong with two other Portsmouth fans but delays due to flooded roads meant that by the time they got to the airport, boarding had been completed and the plane was already on the runway ready to take off.

It looked like it was the end of the trip, but John was determined to watch his beloved Pompey live.

“I made a few calls and although I couldn‘t get everyone sorted with flights I got something arranged for a few of us,” John said.

He got alternate flights via Helsinki, but only three seats were available, Mr. Portsmouth and Walshe, as the organisers, got first pick on the three available seats leaving Allen and the other two to decide who got the last one by tossing a coin.

“I won the toss, and the two other guys who were with us lost out,” Allen said.

Allen, who is also a big Pompey fan, believes John‘s dedication to the club is unrivalled.

“We‘d do anything to see Portsmouth. It‘s the first time I‘ve been out of Europe and I had a great time. John did sterling work for us to get us there. He‘s a diehard Pompey supporter,” he said.

John‘s love for Pompey was brought into sharper perspective when he revealed that he was not a rich man whom money meant little to.

“I‘m a book seller in Portsmouth. I sell all kinds of books and I guess I make enough from the business to afford the trips. I don‘t really care what it costs; so long as it‘s Portsmouth playing I must be there,” he said with a peculiar light in his eyes.

The father of two teenagers, aged 17 and 13, said it was his first time in Africa and he was impressed with what he met.

It was also Portsmouth‘s first time on the continent and Manchester United‘s first time in West Africa. John echoed what the players and officials of the two Premier League clubs said about Nigeria and its people.

He said, “Nigeria is a great place and the people are fantastic. I‘ve been shown love by everybody and I‘ve taken so many pictures.

“If the rest of Africa is like this then it‘s a great continent, filled with warm people. I‘ve had a good time here and would love to return. I hope Portsmouth gets invited again.”

John, whose vast knowledge of the history and the goings on in the Pompey dugout makes him something of an expert on technical matters, backs Nwankwo Kanu in the transfer dispute between the Super Eagles captain and the Portsmouth hierarchy.

“Kanu is a fantastic footballer and he deserves a two-year deal. I don‘t know what else the management wants from him.

“He scored the goal that took us to the FA Cup final and then scored the only goal in the final. Give him three years if he wants, that‘s what I say,” he said.

The coming of Peter Crouch, a player similar in style and stature to Kanu, is seen as a sign that the Nigerian might not get to play much next season.

John disagrees, saying, “I‘m sure they can play together and get us a good number of goals. With Crouch, Kanu and Jermain Defoe, I believe we‘ve got a great combination of strikers who‘ll get us goals in the new season.”

Portsmouth‘s opponent in the second match of the Tinapa fiesta, English and European champion Manchester United, is one of the most popular clubs in the world.

But to John, there is only one club worth mentioning.

“Manchester United? Never heard of them. I only know about Portsmouth and you better believe it,” he said tongue-in-cheek when our correspondent teased John that Pompey would get beaten on Sunday.

As predicted, the ‘unknown‘ United beat Portsmouth 2-1, but Mr. Portsmouth Football Club Westwood was not bothered. He was probably planning his next trip with Pompey. To the North Pole, if that‘s where the club decides to go next.

Imagine that. . .I decide to go on one over Defoe and Crouch
and the Foquards, Defoe especially decide to embarrass me.

Well, my opinion of the two still stand. Defoe is a ball hugging idiot
till he repeats yesterdays unselfishness a bit more(2nd goal) and Crouch
is a dongoyaro who is outjumped by folks a whole foot shorter.

But good news though. Tiago Motta might sign for the club. Now wouldn't that
be something. God knows we need all the help we can get in the midfield.

And Utaka. . . . .the lazy gunt. . .don't even get me started
