We live today in a golden age. This is an era that men have looked forward to, dreamed of, and worked towards for thousands of years. We in Nigeria are particularly fortunate to live in a country filled with boundless opportunities. But do you know what happens to the average Nigerian? Let’s take a look at 100 men who start even at the age of 25, do you have any idea what will happen to those men by the time they are 65? If you asked each of these men if he wanted to be rich; he would say yes. But by the time they are 65, only one (1) will be rich, four (4) will be financially independent, five (5) will still be working, and fifty four (54) will be broke. Now think for a moment, only five (5) out of the original one hundred (100) will make it to financial independence.
Now think of it, in Nigeria right now there are over 15 million people 65 years of age and older. Most of them are broke – they are dependent on someone else for life’s necessities. We learn to read by the time we are 7 years old, we learn to make a living by the time we are 25 years old and usually by that time we are not only making a living but also supporting a family. Yet by the time we are 65 years old, we haven’t learnt how to become financially independent. A survey was conducted one time that covered a lot of men (working men), and these men were asked: “Why do you work?”, “Why do you get up in the morning?”. Nineteen (19) out of twenty (20) had no idea. If you asked them they would say, “well, everyone goes to work in the morning”.
If you were to total the assets of the wealthiest 8 percent of world population, it would be greater than the combined assets of the other 92 percent. What do they know that you don’t know? Do you need to be lucky, ruthless, brilliant, talented, well connected, charming, unscrupulous or greedy to be financially successful? NO. You just need to understand some basic simple principles and have the courage to act upon them.
