Years ago, I had been struck by some verses in Shakespeare, and I like to repeat them to myself whenever I am under a spell of ingratitude.
"Blow, blow, thou winter wind, thou art not so unkind as man's ingratitude....... "Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky, that does not bite so nigh as benefits forgot."
Ingratitude is something very difficult to forget, if not to forgive. It breaks up families and destroys love. It stings the heart that loves and bites the hand that helps. In day-to-day life, one has to do favours and likewise to receive them. Favours beget favours. Thanks beget thanks. If people would be only a little more grateful, what a change would there be in the world! Many more would pay attention and follow the advice of John Wesley: "Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as you can."
