I tell you, all manner of things happen in China. A few days ago, InfoNubia reported the story of a Chinese guy who killed himself after an argument with his girlfriend at a shopping mall. Today, it's about a furious Chinese father who stripped his truant son to his underwear, tied him to a tree in a busy street, and whipped him. This wasn't just an ordinary day. The temperature was about 40°F (5°C) on the day the poor boy was disciplined. According to the Daily Mail, corporal punishment of the kind meted out to the Nanchong boy is lawful in China, although there are legal provisions to prevent excessive child abuse. The law even goes to far as to allow authorities to order parents to subject their children to 'strict discipline' if they are guilty of serious misbehavior. Isn't this punishment a bit too harsh? Agreed, the boy was wrong for skipping school, but tying him to a tree for some whooping isn't necessary.
