Red Poetry: A Touch Of Christmas by ayd91(m): 9:50am On Dec 18, 2013 |
Its Christmas time and I think it will be nice for us in the poetry corner to celebrate in our own way. Lets put together a collection of Christmas poems. Please let it be your original works. |

Christmas In The Sahara Let snow fail to fall, Let Ice fail to form, Let Santa miss my call, Christmas'll stand alone. Friday is black everywhere but here, No smoking vents for saint Nicholas I swear. Trust my guts, He'll make it to all but here. Jingle Jingle, Sounds the messiah never heard, The sounds I hear from afar. Gusty winds fill the air, Camels strut as we ride through death dunes. Memories of the magies fill my mind, The mystical king, His huge destiny, What it was all about. So if no tree is lit, If no missilttoe hangs above me, If no presents sit at my tree, I still have the messiaha to celebrate. I'll be merry, The constellations cheer me, Family surrounds me, Wouldn't trade them for anything else. |

Nice initiative. Will put up mine soon. Do announce the thread in other thread, so that other poets become aware. |

Its here! I could smell it like the Harmattan breeze I also could see the droplets of dews and ice Struggling to cling on my window's eyes Its time! My costume of merriment Envelop me is somewhat colours Of Christmas flag With hopping boots and gloves to match Down and far farther from the freezing field Blossoms petite cuttons sprouts off its buds "Oh there is my hair and beard to be..." (Then back inside) I'm with few pennies With no gifts nor wheels or carts Just my young self clad in Santa's fur Well, it isn't Christmas yet It's just 11:37pm But I know Christmas is here. .. |

NATIVITY - GLADYS CASELY-HAYFORD Within a native hut, ere stirred the dawn, Unto the pure one was an infant born, Wrapped in blue lappah that His mother dyed, The Babe still slept, by all things glorified. Spirits of black bards bust their bonds and sang 'Peace upon earth' until the heavens rang. All the black babies who from earth had fled Peeped through the clouds - then gathered round His head, Telling of things a babe needs to do, When first he opes his eyes on wonder new; Telling Him that sleep was sweetest rest, All comfort came from His mother's sweetest breast. Their gift was Love, caught from the springing sod, Whilst tears and laughter were the gifts of God. Then all the wise men of the past stood forth, Filling the air, East, West, and South and North, And told him of the joy that wisdom brings To mortals in their earthly wanderings. The children of the past shook down each bough, Wreathed frangipani blossoms for his brow, They put pink lillies in His mother's hand, And heaped for both the first fruits of the land. His father cut some palm fronds, that the air Be coaxed to zephyrs while He rested there. Birds trilled their hallelujahs; all the dew Trembled with laughter til the babe laughed too. Black women brought their love so wise And kissed their motherhood into his mother's eyes. This poem was written in the 1940's by Gladys Casely-Hayford. She retells the original Nativity story as if it had happened in Africa. Replacing Bethlehem to tropical Africa, the cold wintry manger to a native hut. And blending a communal happy African atmosphere that surrounds the birth of a child with the retrospective happiness Christians feel when they remember the birth of Christ. Enjoy this masterpiece as we celebrate this season!! |

The hot harmattan wind blows unseen And tries to dry up the season's sheen And thus, it blows hot and blows dry still But the season's joy is still up to fill The land is adorned with white and red Not the gory one of someone dead But the red of merry and peaceful white All aglow with bounty green of colours bright But what is Christmas today to me? A day when other members of family Come en masse to pay their yearly visit, A longer time to cook that we usually eat, A day superficial smiles we splatter To temporarily fill our sorrows' crater... "Smile, smile, smile and be happy my son, For on this day our saviour was born" Mother will say with a voice so high. But we all know that is another lie. |
