Am delighted to share with interested Nairalanders the following NAF Gulma Videos:

1. Gulma Tactical UAV (NAF 610)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX1L_AxHXXw

2. Gulma Tactical UAV (NAF 611) - Showing Mobile Ground Control Station, Tracking Antenna and Team operations

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq_Xqa3Wg-8

The Gulma UAV Launch and recovery is performed by an 'External Pilot' (EP). The EP hands over the UAV to the GCS crew after launching (take-off) and getting to a safe altitude. Operation and mission is handled by the 'Internal Pilots'; commanding the UAV from within the mobile GCS. The Gulma UAV is NOT meant to carry Arms. Its for Surveillance, search and Rescue, Pipeline monitoring, Intelligence gathering and more.

All flights in the posted videos were carried out by members of the NAF Pioneer UAV Pilot team that the President and C-in-C, Goodluck Jonathan 'winged' during the unveiling ceremony in Kaduna NAF base on the 17th December 2013.

I imagine that it would take less than a decade, if we chose to pursue it, to go from this to building our own propeller driven airplane. I do not mean assembled like the Beetle, but entirely indigenous. Some may view such a thing as futile in the face of so much availability of proven aircraft in the market; moreover, that propeller air-crafts are ancient technology and that it would show our backwardness as we struggle to produce one when Nations are moving on with software piloted fourth and fifth generation aeroplanes. But those that may thing like this would be short-sighted. I would argue that propeller aircraft are obviously still contemporary. Sure, those used, for instance, by many armies as trainers are more highly sophisticated turboprops, but we would be on our way if would could start producing Spitfire level of sophistication aircrafts. This is because the world is awash with free blueprints to 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s generation aircrafts that would become suddenly easier understood by us once we have learned and become familiar with the technicalities of aircraft building.

I suppose, I mean a sort of accelerated development informed by the advantage of being witnesses to the evolution of a technical process

Why isn't this On front page yet,
btw @ op, DO YOU THINK you can Upload some of the footage collected by the drone, or at least, some video of the relay station

Due to the privacy and sensitivity of the imagery gotten during the fights, I am not at liberty to post that. Another flight will be done on landmarks and free areas and I will post that when authorized.

any idea about the future developmental plans of the UAV? Will it get bigger? Does it use GPS NAV in its waypoint navigation? hear the Gulma is different from the Amebo3,any ideas? You should join beegeagles blog(if you are not already a member).
Re: Nigerian Air Force Gulma Tactical Small UAS (SUAS) by Andrew3(m): 2:25pm On Dec 20, 2013
This is short range because the control is standalone. Nigeria will need an effective satellite to own and control long range drones.

What is the big deal?

You can buy one online for $700.

Unless OP is claiming that they built it from scratch...at which point I will know he is lying.

This is a very good development in Nigeria.

But am confused?? This is a Country that barely has electricity, good roads, dilapidated structures...bad governance.

They left all that to create UAVs? Wow...

Someone please tell me how this people think. HA!

i love drones..
Btw, what about all our Russian/chinese satellites??
Besides why is this drone not able to carry arms? It should have a small payload at least; just in case it runs into some Militants or Boko Boys.

This Gulma is a phucking toy grin grin
How can a drone make so much noise? angry angry
How can a drone be started by manually rolling the propeller? undecided undecided
How is it the drone has to be held by human hands to steady it whilst taxiing and before take off? sad sad
A president that has his priorities right will tell his Air-force chief to sack the 'Engineers' that did this gimmick but no not Ebele Jonathan shocked shocked
SR was right to say he launched a drone which did not fly and the Nigerian Air Force should have kept their peace rather than release video of this toy which Boko Haram will shoot down with bows and arrows talk less of militants using RPGs angry angry

One of the biggest problem Nigeria faces today is that majority of the citizen do not know how far the world has left Nigeria behind! So when next to nothing is achieved, we over celebrate and shout at the top of our voices!

Yes, we have coupled a drone and flew it to some height, that should not call for the kind of celebration we are seeing and hearing about, instead we should go back develop things more like the Iranians and then WoW the world with the improvement.

There are many Nigerians in diaspora that have expertise in the design and construction and after sales remote maintenance of UAVs, MISAs, Missiles, Aircraft, but with a political leadership that lacks vision, and ideas, many have preferred to stay away, Hence the nation end up with a noisy toy they call drone

I heard it from from some guys helping me move my goods in Jankara market that the Boko Haram guys have developed a Long Range Catapult to bring down this drone called Gulma. They say the name of the catapult is 'Kanakana'.
Re: Nigerian Air Force Gulma Tactical Small UAS (SUAS) by mikkyphp(m): 3:02pm On Dec 20, 2013
Guys Guys Guys...Stop the Cynicism

This is our first attempt, whether or not it is a toy purchased over the counter, the fact is that the UAV has been modified with the addition of on-board cameras and GPS to perform pre-defined tasks within its ambit. the GCS is quite impressive with the ground mounted mobile radio antennae; though i am not sure what its maximum range is.

With this display and proper PR, they could get proper funding to expand the program to incorporate other features and capabilities - possiblly carry arms.

NAF has not come out to say they invented it, neither do they have any interest in re-inventing the wheel. Lets cut them some slack.

I believe with proper vision and funding, this program could be expanded and go a long way in securing our borders, providing relief in disaster areas, beaming live footages, aerial pictures of BH strong holds....etc...who knows, maybe jumia will use it to deliver parcels within the lagos metropolis using an octacopter grin

good work boys!

I have one in my back yard. See for yourself. If you need one, $425 will bring you an exact replica of that. It even comes with an on board camera for real time streaming.
In no time now, the Niger-area Air force will claim to have spent millions on this project, while all they did was to order it and later brand it with the country's flag...
