Daily Manna: Humility Demanded

"Saturday 21, December 2013"

*TEXT: MATTHEW 18:1-14*

*"KEY VERSE: “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:4)."*
David Watson, a gospel preacher, once said: “The Christian who is ambitious to be a star disqualifies himself as a leader.” This aptly explains the danger of pride. From our text, it could be deduced that Christ’s disciples were struggling for position as they wanted to know who was the greatest among them. Jesus, while trying to teach them the spiritual perspective of greatness, called a little child who stood among them, and told them that the greatest would be the person who could humble himself as a little child.
The implication of this is that humility must be devoid of positionseeking, hypocrisy and unforgiveness, among others. Little children are quite noted to easily admit their mistakes. They do not also inwardly react when they are criticized or feel hurt when those they dislike are honoured. They are not more concerned about their reputation than God’s. They always disclose their shortcomings and seek for assistance, where necessary.
Today, some Christians do things to get the praise and compliments of men. They are quick to correct others of their mistakes, just to prove that they are more righteous or superior. They feel important and alw ays like comparing themselves with other people. All these things are marks of pride, not humility. We must bear in mind always that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Jesus equally taught about abstaining from every evil activity. He stated that if your hand, foot or eye would make you commit sin, you should get rid of that part of the body, as it would be better to get to heaven maimed than with the whole body thrown into hell. This implies that any object of sin or backsliding should be jettisoned.
*THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Pride changed angels to devils; humility makes men as angels.*
