This may be a little belated, since this thread is a month old,

But lawyers RULE grin

And about lawyers and lying: Every attorney knows or should know the rules of professional responsibility that is spoon-fed in law school (in the U.S, anyway). Who wants to run the risk of losing the license to practice over a client's case?
Besides, it's all about presenting the evidence that is available to you, and it's the opposing side's problem if they can't disprove it.

Lying is an art a lot of people spend a lifetime perfecting it, people lie; lawyers, presidents, doctors, engineers, artisans, lecturers, hairdressers, carpenters, politicians, bank executives i could go on and on, so why pick on lawyers: fact is- the law is an ass, a big one, lawyers worth their salt ride on it-they necessarily need not tell lies, if u understand the ways laws are made, they are fashioned so they can be twisted and turned upside down, inside out. The lawyer has none else to work with execpt these laws so he becomes a "lier". Frankly the law puts us into a lot of things u really dont have to do all that twisting and lieing to break even as a lawyer, there are also strict rules of professional conduct lawyers have to conform with. The lying game is common to everybody and not only lawyers, stop picking on the lawyers.

i am not an attorney but an accountant(WIP) same with my bros like victor4u & sharpman, but i disagree totally that lawyers are liars.
ever seen the title of a sticker that says"law is my profession, trouble is my name"?, well from this i see a lawyer as:
1. a trained professional who is there to bail us out of trouble by exploring the judicial precedence and also the Lapuners(open-ended statements) from applicable Acts to get a favourable verdict.

so if a lawyer can explore this means and get a favourable results, i think they deserve to be respected.

i'll add here too that every professional is a solution provider, i dont believe in stories but results and i think some people may share my views. A result oriented lawyer has more crowd than a story telling one lipsrsealed

Litigation is a game. One of its rules is 'lie in the best way so as to win'.
In the field, we don't see it as lying. Those are the gimmicks of the legal practice. Besides, how would you say we are lying when all we do is to use the stipulations (provisions) of the law to assist people like you out of your mess? The legislators make provisions for the law, we use these provisions. No lawyer has ever won a GOOD case outside the confines of the statutes. What I think is that most of you who are calling your bluffs here are novices. What you don't know will forever remain enigmatic to you. So, that's the fact.

We don't lie. Point of correction. Besides, why do u think you pay lawyers? So that they can lie for you? This is hilarious! Please house, drop that notion. It is wrong.

One house!!!

I have read and diciphered most comments posted and i have to place my comment as i just cant ignore this one. I am a lawyer and i am tired of the old saying "lawyers are liers".
From my perception of the noble profession and practice of same by myself and fellow lawyers, i would add that there isnt much lying involved as much as representing a client whom you owe a fiduciary relationship to. We have the ethics of our profession that must be dutifully followed as failure could lead to being disbarred from the profession.
We should be appreciated by the lay people and not branded as liers but seen instead as the modern day robin hood with unwavered loyalty to our clients and course in general.
For those invovled in coporate practice, there is no room for lies as you represent the interest of your coporate client. The thing is law isnt all about litigation, but most lay people narrow down the practice and relate lawyers solely to litigators. Even the litigators have a due process of law that they must follow in each individual case and we most not forget the issue of Judicial precedent.
Lets face it, the legal profession cannot be overemphasised and is not about lying as people authomatically assume.
We are not liers but soldiers in the temple of justice.

A lawyer cannot lie outright due to running afoul of his professional responsibilities.

For example, if I was representing a client that’s on trial for murder and he was caught at the murder scene with the weapon in his hand, do you think I should just throw in the towel?

What you have to understand is that a defense lawyer cannot prove the prosecutor’s case. It is up to the prosecutor to explain the circumstantial evidence found on my client and it is my sworn duty as a defense attorney to create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors or try to get the evidence thrown out. Prosecutors and defense attorneys are adversaries with divergent ultimate goals.

You have to understand that if everybody including the prosecutor and the defense attorneys plays their part zealously, on average, the truth will prevail.

Here in the US, if your client confesses to you, you cannot put him on the stand knowing that he will perjure himself. The best thing you can do is to explain to your client from the outset about the ground rules and tell him to keep his incriminating statements to himself.

The forgoing reasons are why I can never practice criminal or family law, because in real life, the good guys don’t always win and even if they win, they still hurt.
