NBC Vows To Shut Down Media Houses That Operates With Expired License by emmyset(m): 8:40am On Dec 31, 2013
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has
said it will shut down the 49 Television and Radio
stations that are still operating with expired licenses
and owing statutory fees and levies.
Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday in Abuja, the
commission's legal adviser Mr. Obi said the
commission will after the New Year break shut down
the defaulting radio and TV stations.
"Any station that has failed to settle its outstanding
licenses and levies and is still operating will be forced
to shut down by the time we come back from New
year break because they are still operating illegally
after being given several warnings," he said.
He also said the stations had been given several
warnings and added that the grace periods given to
them had expired.
The NBC Published names of government and
privately owned broadcast stations still in defaults on
December 23.
It said it would be followed by enforcement of
sanctions in accordance with the NBC Act.
Government owned stations that will be sanctioned
include the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria
(FRCN), Kano Broadcasting Services, Plateau State
Broadcasting Services, Broadcasting Corporation of
Abia State among others.
Among privately owned stations to be shutdown
include Daar Communications Plc (network licence
for Radio/TV, and Daarsat), Samina Broadcasting
Company Limited (Kiss FM Abuja), Network News 24
Limited, Lagos, Proudly Africa Media Limited, Lagos.
Others include Cross Media Limited (Terrestrial TV
Abuja), Sheriff Comm. Ltd (FM radio Maiduguri),
Afrinet Limited (FM radio, Abia State), and 28
Digitect Broadcasting Ltd (Lagos).
