From my friends at Radio Netherlands Worldwide - Africa

A top marriage-killing # money issue,
according to Investopedia.com, is power
play. It may occur in situations where one
partner is unemployed or if one earns
more than the other. When these
situations are present, says the website,
the breadwinner (or the spouse who
makes more money) often wants to
dictate how the couple uses their money.

Do you think the bigger earner should get
to decide the spending priorities?

Only in ChrIslamic countries. kiss
Or in SHARIA-CHRISTIC CULTS or cultures. kiss

In civilized parts of the world. . .IT IS A JOINT VENTURE even without the use of JOINT ACCOUNTS! kiss
Everyone knows his or her responsibilities. . . AND THE FAMILY MOVES ON!
Not an issue. kiss

Marriage is not an autocratic or authoritarian system of government.

The man/woman couple should dictate what they want to do with money.

Obviously, it is not a straightforward issue across cultures. Investopedia is United States based. It would not be writing about it if it is not an issue there.

You might want to reconsider your submission because it seems that even in "civilised" parts of the world, not everyone knows their responsibilities.

Thank you.

I am saying you are looking at the issue rather too simplistically. Your experience might not be as common as you think even where you live.

I think it is important for both to be aware of the finances. There is always the chance that something will happen to one or the other. If the surviving spouse does not know anything about their finances, this leaves that person vulnerable financially. This is especially true with women. A woman with no financial knowledge is especially vulnerable. Especially in a society as male dominated as Nigeria. I would think. How many times do the in-laws come in and take everything. Leaving the wife to fend for herself, return to her parents or bend to their will.

I have a friend whose father passed. The father had his brothers as next of kin and executor of his will. The brothers-in-law came in and took everything, including her house. She was left with nothing. The Elders in the village sided with the brothers, so she did not fight it. I think it is important for a woman, especially to be involved in the finances and know exactly what is going on. She should be involved in all aspects of the family finances. She should be in a position to fight off the vultures, should they start to circle. I don’t care how close you are to your family and his, people go crazy when someone dies. Especially when money is involved.

Your analysis is on point. You will not believe how low people can become when money is involved.
