Transportation Business In Lagos by weimar: 5:03pm On Aug 15, 2008
I am seriously considering buying a 15 + driver seaters vehicle for transportation. I am simply researching:

1. What is the expected minimal daily return after expensives settled (like fuel, and others)?
a). Can you get up to N40K per day if you are the main driver?
b). Can you get up to N30K if you assigned a driver to drive for you?

2. What if you decide to put the vehicle on Lagos and Benin Road, what kind of return should you be expecting? (ie after expenses are been settled)
a) N40K, that is driving yourself?
b) N30k assigned to a driver?

I am considering the these ideas ie taking the factor that drivers assigned are trustworthy people. Please reply as soon as you can. God bless you all.

My advice wld be to be careful, cos to get a reliable someone to drive with soe dumb daily excuses, you will have to be blessed, i heard the drivers are just there to sucks other dry, however, i am sure there would still b one or 2 good people in the country, just be patient and i am sure you will find one.

40K for a day? are you joking or what?
You must be really greedy to think of such amount.
You should be taking 40k per week not day.
Thats 200k a week and 1milla a month.
Then Bill Gate is nobody to Ekene Dilichukwu and Young Shall Grow.

ASL33. All I need is your reason as to what you think and not just what you think. Tell me why you think what you think. I believe if 15 seater van transport passengers from Lagos to Benin once a day at N1500, what is the total amount made on round trip per day, per week and then per month?

15 passenger x (times) N1500 = N22,500 x (times 2) for a round trip per day = N45,000 per day. Considering all the expensives driver might have at the end of the day, you should be left with N30K per day.
Per month (22 working days) x N30K =N660k

Please ASL33 share your experience. Thank you

@ Weimer,

Im not into tranportation, however heres where your calculation is terribly wrong.

1. the driver cannot always find passanger to and fro everyday

2. Fuel cost. How was he suppose to go on one tank of gas from Lagos to Benin and back on one tank? Even if he did who will pay for initial fill up at the beginning of the day?

3. Hes gonna pay for loading charges from the garage everytime he load. The agberos will also have to be paid.

4. Do you really think he will work everyday day in day out? No break , No rest. Rain, shine, sleet or snow? Dealing with police, traffic etc

5. Hes not the only bus you know. They get on "turns" etc. He might not have his turn every time.

6. What happens for breakdown. The car being commercial will break down often. Too many jagajaga road. That is down time.

And lastly if all your calculation is right. There only a difference of 15,000 Naira. Fueling a bus can cost at least 6,000 - 8,000 ( A regular car can be arouund 4,000). Leaving only around 7,000. He risk his life only for that while you onlyt sit at home. Can you work for that low? Everyday? Even though you own the car.

Please drive that bus yourself.

Well, if you are no experience in doing this sort of business, it will be better for you do your own research. This is exactly what I am doing via this medium. Nevertheless, there are other incentives that I have put together that will cause a driver not to resist. With the kind of stimulus I will package for the driver, the driver will be a fool to let go. Below is the short pick of the plan.

1. The driver will only drive for me for 18 months.
2. After 18 months, the driver will become the sole owner of the van
3. The beneficiary will do the same to another trusthworthy driver
4. This model doesn't have to be done only with transportation business, I believe the idea should transient all through other business ideas.

What a way to help your neighbour.
Why 18 months and not five years? It will take about 18 months for a driver who is serious to pay off the van and at the same time make a good profit for the owner. This is an outstanding win-win situation were greed has no room to breed. The driver is paid monthly and he gets to own the car at the end of 18 months.

However, failure to abide by the contract will annul the plan. Guess what? the driver will lose.

I strongly believe just as one has worked hard to earn his hard earned money to start a transportation business (yes sitting at home while your money work for you), so will the businessman take time to look for the trustworthy driver that will help him achieve his plan. To me this is a sound business where everyone involved is a winner. I hope this make sense to you.

@ Weimer,

Point well taken. However, you are assumming "all things being equal". The fact that you based your earnings so close to a "perfect daily run" will be the issue that will affect the 18months span.

Its not that the plan is bad, but that the expectation and the reality if things are 2 diff. things in general.

Also you mentioned that the "beneficiary will do the same for the next person". Dont forget that you are assuming again. Life is not perfect. People cannot always see things your way. why do politicians stack billions upon billion in bank acct and in their house while the teachers and others will go months without pay?  Greed!

The beneficiary may not always share your "pay it forward" attitude. They will promise one thing and do another.

I'm not saying its a bad plan however, reality bites  grin

I hear my brother. This is why I am trying to do my part to effect some type of genuine changes in the way business is done in Nigeria. It requires hard, where you set up your objectives to meet your goals. We need some principles in place so that our foundation will always remain solid and enduring the circumstances define our future.

Thank you promise72.

Weimar, I will take it that you are not in the motherland or you have been living abroad for a bit, logically your plan is awesome, realistically it wont fly, not in Nigeria, just as someone has mentioned, there are far too many events that can occur in a day in the life of every bus driver that you will not even anticipate. Did you put into consideration how many times the driver will be arrested for not having the right papers "so they say", did you consider how many times the driver will go and jam one chief that the chief will seize the bus, "except you yourself know people". Technically, you have to put all these things into consideration. Your mathematics will now need to be re-evaluated to only expect minimum returns and hope that your driver will deliver above minimum for you. Though you have a wonderful idea, but realistically, you need the Grace of God to pull it through successfully for the aniticipated 18 months with a God fearing driver. Good luck with you plan and i hope it works out for you.
Re: Transportation Business In Lagos by weimar: 1:45pm On Aug 24, 2008
Yes!!!!! The good thing about this plan is that it offers the driver the vast opportunity to stretch himself beyond his imagination. Where in the world would you find a someone in less than two years give you the privilege to own your van while providing you means to earn a monthly living? This sort of business plan will only attract an intelligent, diligent, and hardworking driver. This plan will never work for someone who is pessimistic or extremely uptimistic, greedy, or someone with no vision, someone who has no clue as how to lay out his objectives to meet his goal. The type of driver I am focused on is the driver who has the ability to count the cost before venturing, someone who can envision opportunities while at the same time is extremely creatrive to reach goal, someone with with a keen hindsight to see a genuine opportunity and quickly cease the moment. The desired driver must meet and adhere to the principles put in place to drive this plan to work.

As the owner of the van, my assignment is to thoroughly scrutinize every candidate for this job. I have in place tools and procedures to achieve this. It may take time, but when the time comes, you will get what you are looking for. Patience, longsuffering, wisdom, humility are virtues that I cherish in each potential candidate for this job.

Remember that a good driver will do everything they can to ensure that required daily N30K is be delivered, even if it does not make that amount. This is the spirit of good driver. He is obliged, determined and he believes he will succeed. He goes, trusting that God will do the rest for him.

weimar hi,

i am planning the same at the moment also, i have some vans i bought from germany still grounded in uk because someone is thinking of putting some shit inside them, but mine is a long term thing, i have a lot people doing the business and most of them are away from niga and surprisingly business is good.  after the day's taking the driver will deposit the money into this guys bank account which he checks on the internet anyway daily.

forget the notion of the driver making money from you, that is inevitable  -  As long as he deposit your AGREED cut constantly without failure what is the problem.

Guys why not invest in telecom, housing or any oda business cos it would be sad to see your money go down the drain. If you must run a transport coy in Nigeria,my advice to you is to give the Bus to a transport Coy like Ifex, peace, etc so the Company pays you instead of individual who wud reap u off.
Re: Transportation Business In Lagos by Ulamaster(m): 6:23am On Sep 09, 2008
The plan of the poster is what should be in an ideal situation. But I doubt if the vagaries of daily life in Nigeria will make it come to reality. For one , the premise of a round trip between Benin and Lagos is almost unrealisable. ( Have you been on that road lately ? ) Two , the road condition and rough terrain makes any vehicle that plies that road often more of a mechanics candidate than a constantly road worthy vehicle.

My humble opinion would be that Weimer should set his target at N10,000 - N13,000 take home on any day his vehicle makes the trip successfully.

Hi, i really support the idea of leasing your bus to a transport company and they pay u in return. That way, you save

yourself from worries and unnecessary hypertension. Since these people are already into the business, they know their

way around all these issues so, just strike a deal with them and they pay u monthly for using your bus. That way, it is

not your business how they use it or what route they ply u just relax and get paid at the end of each month. As for your

plan of giving the bus to the driver after 18months, i dont quiet get it. Are u saying the driver gets ti leave u after

18months and then u are back to square one of looking for another driver and buyinganother bus? Do u think u would

have gathered enough money to buy another bus by the 18th month from the proceeds of the business and even if

you do wont your previous driver now be your competitor, i dont quiet get your plan so please think properly before you make a move ok?

please take my advise give the bus to a transport company.

TRANSPORT BUSINESS IN LAGOS IS A GOOD BUSINESS FROM MY OWN OBSERVATION I AM PLANING OF DOING THE BUSINESS GIVING THE BUS TO COMPANY OR NOT ONE SHOULD ALSO KNOW IS A RISK THE DRUNKEN DRIVER CAN DAMAGE YOUR BUS ON THE HIGH WAY AND YOU LOSE YOUR MONEY ABOUT DAILY RETURNS IF HE FAIL TO YOU TAKE YOUR BUS FROM HIM CONSIDER THE RISK BEFORE GOING INTO IT 30,000 OR 40,000 PER DAY IS IMPOSSIBLE.
