Reps defend purchase of N2.3bn cars

The House of Representa- tives yesterday defen- ded contract for the pur-chase of 360 units of Peugeot 406 cars at the cost of N2.3bn.RepAbdulrahman Suleiman Kawu, Deputy Minority leader and Rep Akindahusi Titilayo Melodia former chairman Hou-se Services Committee said the House at its executive session in December approved the purchase and no member of the House had handled the pur-chase.



Rep Akindahusi told Daily Trust on telephone the House in an executive session appro-ved the purchase but that it was the management of the National Assembly that handled the payment.
“If they said something is wrong with the purchase, you can ask the management of the National Assembly. No member in the House handles the pur-chase, we sat in the executive session and approved the pur-chase and Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria supplied the vehicles. “For details about the car purchase you can ask the mana-gement of the National Assem-bly”, she added.

Also Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Abdulrahman Suleiman Kawu said the decision to buy ope-rational vehicles for committees was taken at an executive session of the whole House and was not the decision of the lea-dership or any of its principal offi-cers alone.

Kawu said following the de-cision of the executive session of the whole House, it was unanimously resolved that the leadership should hands-off all negotiation for, and purchase of the said vehicles and allow the management of the House to handle it.

A newspaper report on Sun-day said there were grey areas in the contract.

Nigeria is looking for loan to the tune of billions of Naira from the world bank to spend on electricity, teachers had to fight endlessly to have a little increase in their pay and our dear unhonorables just spent this much purchasing cars.
What baffles me is what is the need for such. Few months ago i was in the legislative quarters where these guys lives and i spent a few days, i was able to move round and i saw no house with less than 3 cars. Why must these guys feel they are free to enrich themselves and care less about the people that voted them in? I still wonder why Nigerians still vote in elections instead of sitting in their houses afterall they aint going to serve anyone and worst still the votes dont really count they only install themselves. hope we'll wake from our sleep one day sha.

and of course they just increased their pay by 100% heeeeeee Nigeria!

That's what we'll get when we expect politicians to spend heavily before we vote for them. The only people who can actually please Nigerians before elections are those who have looted in the past; hence we get the kind of politicians we deserve
