Most cars- (small to mid-size) come with 4 cylinder engines. A v6 is an engine with 6 cylinders. More importantly, it is two 3-cylinder engines coupled together in a v-configuration either at 90^o, or 45^o or other similar angle. There used to be normal 6 cylinder engines i.e.- the 6 cylinders are arranged in a straight block driven by a single camshaft but these engines tend to be too long longitudinally. V6 configuration offers same 6 cylinders in shorter/smaller/compact space.


V6 is more powerful than 4-cylinder engine and offers better frontal stability and faster acceleration. But they consume more fuel than 4 cylinder engines. V6 is generally suited for long distance highway driving. It is not too appropriate for city driving i.e.- within Lagos. It consumes much more fuel than when traveling at high speed and even more fuel when in stop and go traffic (hold-up / go slow).
