King James Oladipo Aroko-Ola Buremoh is the Oba, or hereditary monarch, of the Nigerian town of Idera -- a tiny kingdom home to about 20,000 people. He's also a New York tour bus driver. Recently, two exchange students from Nigeria were told by their tour guide on the bus that a Nigerian king was driving. They raced down the stairs to see who it was. haha. Its getting quite common these days to see Nigerian monarchs engaged in some other occupation. Especially the younger generation ones. This thing shouldnt be forced on people- if someone says they dont want to do it, then why cant the kingmakers simply find another candidate. |

Respect to this man. At least he is not at home knowing he has no money and sitting on his a$$ demanding money from local govt. because of his status. He is making a way for himself, buying a fresh water well for his people, now that's commendable. |

lucabrasi: Sometimes they pressure people to be obas, saying its unbreakable tradition (or else abomination not to do it). I heard of a couple of young, educated people who were told this. One male, one female. Both with good education, great jobs and quite exposed. It all depends on the kingmakers and who they want to be on the throne, for their own political purposes. What some of the monarchs do is compromise by accepting the kingship, but continuing with their regular jobs/lives elsewhere. I think these kinds of things shouldnt be open to candidates under 60 years of age. |

What's the big deal. If it pays him to drive a bus, so be it. Tour bus drivers make good money. Bus drivers are respectable people. Why can't a king be a bus driver if he wishes. Obviously he's king of a small/unknown town. If the oba of owo or the oba of ile ife drives a bus in the U.S, then only will we have a reason to post it on forums, This is a non issue |

nzeaji: no, its not a disgracce to any royal throne. He has a honest occupation- should he be transporting drugs instead? Or hanging around waiting for handouts and killing goats and chickens for sacrifice? He's setting a good example for his people. There is dignity in labor. The only comma here is the number of children- probably from more than one wife. But at least he's working to support them. If more Nigerians thought like him, the nation would be a better place. And comparing him to Oba of Benin or Queen of England is far fetched. In any case, if either of the two decided they wanted some experience in everyday employment, then its their choice, imo. It doesnt take away from their authority. Thats one of the things William and Harry sometimes wish for- just to experience life as an ordinary person. |

First and foremost he is not an Oba. This is another white lie used to rubbish our monarchs. An Oba will never, I repeat never lower himself to such ridiculous lengths, secondly the day he turned down his Nigerian passport and took the American passport is the day he stopped being a Nigerian citizen talkless of a respectable Oba. He might be an Oba, There are different grades of kings, You have the major ones like benin,ife, sokoto whilst there are smaller kingdoms who have their own obas. It is not news. My friends dad is an Oba and he lives in lagos. He only goes to the kingdom on weekends. He was given the throne while he was working for an oil company and he kept his job!!! I would have simply read this over if i did not know anything about the person the story is about, but since i know and it is good to clear up a few things, I will let it flow. He is a relative of mine(a close one at that).Idera is a small town in Ifelodun Local Govt somewhere in Kwara state and the people there are mainly farmers(that eliminates comparing it with Benin,etc), i don't even know what grade the kingship position of the village is. The kingship used to be rotated until one ruling house decided to dominate, eventually the people decided that no more of that and they chose their king. The onus fell on this honorable man, and as daunting as the task is, he accepted the choice of the people, most of especially the youths of the village. Before then, he was not permanently based in Nigeria and he has his family that he still takes care of. At one time , he was a wrestler, some people older than me may know, he was known as "African Tiger", and we all know that Nigeria glorifies athletes (****hicks****  , i am talking of some 15 years ago).Now, he is a bus-driver(and, ), would it have been better if he was a thief or drug pusher and he was throwing ill-gotten money about. He chose to do an honest job, which i respect him for. At least the upbringing he was given, he has followed and held on.If nothing, he can look his people in the eye and know that he still merits their respect as a fine, honest and good leader. Need i go on, Is that not what is killing Nigeria today, dishonest thieving leaders.If he is a bus-driver abroad and it feeds his family,gives him peace with man and with God,makes him a good leader, then I am right behind him solidly at that, 1 Like |

@ Dis Guy Idera is in Ifelodun Local Government of Kwara State. I was surprise when I clicked on the link myself. Used to live on the same street with the dude way back in 9ja. Back then he was famously known as "Ladi the African Tiger" and I remember watching him take on the likes of Michael Hayes, Ox Baker and some other professional wrestlers from the USA at the stadium in Ilorin. *** Those were dem dayzzzzzzzzzzz |
