From my inbox, interesting piece.

I hope accurate, factual and truthful information is made available all the time to all so that people cannot just claim they were misinformed when they take actions that may cost lives like Bush is doing even though in his own case he is lying well well sha.

If Americans Knew - Mission Statement

In a democracy, the ultimate responsibility for a
nation's actions rests with its citizens. The top
rung of government – the entity with the ultimate
power of governance – is the asserted will of the
people. Therefore, in any democracy, it is essential
that its citizens be fully and accurately informed.

In the United States, currently the most powerful
nation on earth, it is even more essential that its
citizens receive complete and undistorted information
on topics of importance, so that they may wield their
extraordinary power with wisdom and intelligence.

Unfortunately, such information is not always forthcoming.

The mission of If Americans Knew is to inform and educate
the American public on issues of major significance that
are unreported, underreported, or misreported in the
American media.

It is our belief that when Americans know the facts on a
subject, they will, in the final analysis, act in
accordance with morality, justice, and the best interests
of their nation, and of the world. With insufficient
information, or distorted information, they may do the
precise opposite.

It is the mission of If Americans Knew to ensure that
this does not happen – that the information on which
Americans base their actions is complete, accurate, and
undistorted by conscious or unconscious bias, by lies of
either commission or omission, or by pressures exerted
by powerful special interest groups. It is our goal to
supply the information essential to those responsible
for the actions of the strongest nation on earth – the
American people.

Action Focus #1

Israel is the largest recipient of US. aid in the entire
world. It receives more aid than that given to all the
countries of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the
Caribbean, put together.

Israel receives over $10 million dollars per day from the
United States, and there is evidence that the total figure
is closer to $15 million a day. Yet this information is
almost never printed in American newspapers. Coverage of
the Middle East in general, and of Israel in particular,
virtually never reports this enormous American connection
with this region.

Empowered by American money, Israel is occupying land that
does not belong to it, is breaking numerous international
laws and conventions of which it is a signatory, and is
promulgating policies of brutality that have been condemned
by the United Nations, the European Union, the National
Council of Churches, Amnesty International, the
International Red Cross, and numerous other international
bodies. This truth is also rarely reported.

Through the money and weaponry provided by the United
States, Israel is imposing an ethnically discriminatory
nation on land that was previously multicultural. There
is ethnic and religious discrimination inherent in its
national identity, and a doctrine of the supremacy of
one group over all others permeates its political,
financial, and military policies. This also is virtually
never reported.

There are a variety of organizations and individuals in
Israel who are protesting their government's policies,
and who are working strenuously and courageously on behalf
of human rights and justice. It is their intent to create
a just and fair nation with equal rights for all its
citizens. They are refusing to serve in the military
occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, and are actively
trying to prevent Palestinian homes from being bulldozed.
These actions are also not covered in the American media.

American support of the Israeli government is against our
national interest on every level: It places us at war
with populations whose desperate plight we are helping to
create, and who, quite correctly, place the responsibility
for their sufferings on us. It makes us an accomplice to
war crimes and an accessory to oppression. This also is
not reported.

In analyzing the American media, we are increasingly
discovering a cover-up of appalling proportions. Israel
is being protected, the news about Palestinians in
particular and Arabs in general is being distorted, and
the American public is being manipulated.

We believe strongly that if Americans knew the truth about
Israel and Palestine -- about the massive amount of our
tax money that is being given away to Israel, and about
the human costs of Israel's American-financed militarism
-- they would demand an immediate re-thinking of our
policies in this region.

It is the goal of If Americans Knew to inform the American
public accurately about this area. Most of all, it is to
inform Americans about our enormous, and too often
invisible, personal connection to it.

Americans, through our blank check to Israel, are
empowering the worst elements of Israeli society, and
undermining those working for a just, peaceful, and
nondiscriminatory nation.

We are driving the violence in this region.
We can stop it.

guess the funny thing about "articles" such as this? Nothing is ever substantiated . . . its all speculative nonsense put together by the ignorant to fool the gullible. Sad.

Has the author forgotten that Egypt is also one of the largest recipients of US foreign aid? Nah, why let facts get in the way of trivia.

Listen to the gullible author:

Americans, through our blank check to Israel, are
empowering the worst elements of Israeli society, and
undermining those working for a just, peaceful, and
nondiscriminatory nation.

- this is simply code for the "1-state solution" which many among the arab world are calling for. Those who are not blind know it is simply an avenue to destroy Israel by demographic means.
Pls can someone tell me how "just, peaceful and non-discriminatory" Lebanon, jordan, Egypt, Gaza, the west bank and Saudi Arabia are?

We are driving the violence in this region.
We can stop it.

- this is not true. America wasnt supporting Israel in 1948 (the French were), yet there was still violence. America wasnt supporting Israel in 1967 yet there was still violence and arab anti-semitism has been rife well before 1900. Who is decieving who?

- and what is the author's solution to "stopping the violence"?

Through the money and weaponry provided by the United
States, Israel is imposing an ethnically discriminatory
nation on land that was previously multicultural.
There
is ethnic and religious discrimination inherent in its
national identity, and a doctrine of the supremacy of
one group over all others permeates its political,
financial, and military policies. This also is virtually
never reported.

1. Israel is 20% arab . . . enough of this rubbish about it imposing an ethnically discriminatory nation.
2. Gaza is judenrein, the goal of the PNA in the westbank is to make it judenrein too . . . and this author blames Israel? Just how "multicultural" is Gaza?
3. Ethnic and religious discrimination is inherent in the identity of Israel? grin Just visit Saudi Arabia or Gaza . . .
4. What is "virtually never reported" is the Hamas constitution that aims to destroy every jew on earth.

Essentially the author's solution to "stopping the violence" is that the US stops arming Israel . . . that way the arabs (who by the way are armed by Russia and Iran) can more easily defeat her.

Quite disingenous i might say.

Only Afam can post such puerile "articles".

Another insightful article from Afam. Thanks!

Every unbiased observer knows that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories (in violation of many UN resolutions) has created an apparent state of perpetual conflict in the Middle-East.

It is indeed shameful that a group of people that gained the world's sympathy after experiencing the utter ruthlessness of the Third Reich will turn around and impose so much pain and hardship on another group of people. Such irony is lamentable!

@RichyBlack,

Glad to know you dey kamkpe.

My worry is that these people that tend to turn logic on its head anytime they see words like US or Israel don't even know how to limit the embarrassment they bring to themselves.

The good news is that one cannot be both the judge and the jury and just like our leaders in Nigeria sometimes come out and make very ridiculous statements I am not really surprised that some of these Nigerians that live outside Nigeria think like some of our leaders and they are always ready to display their extremely high level of ignorance on issues you have more than enough information about.

I go dey pray for them small small sha as people fit dey use their level of reasoning to dey generalize on Nigerians.

Do have a wonderful weekend.

@Afam & Richyblack

" Self Preservation is the first law of nature" Now let scale down to the dispute between Israel and its Arab neigbours. As an individual, it is easier to go about the pursuit of happiness if your society and infact your immediate neigbour recognize your right to life and exixtence. But if on the contrary, there is no basis for agreement. Survival first then we can negotiate for co-existence. For instance, some of Israel neigbour did not recognize her as a country, while some are campaigning that it should be wipe out from the map.

Now for a minute, let me ask this what would I do or what would you do if my neigbour insist I have no right to life. Ofcourse I will everything I have got which includes power, connection, money, just name them to quarantee my survival. Sincerely, that "everything" may include war, invasion of enemy territory or outright genocide. The issue here is you don't wait for a nation that have inclination for Holy Jiad to wipe you out before you defend yourself. The truth is each and every one of us will do more to survive than Israel is currently doing.

U S disregarded the support of UN to invade Iraq tha is thousands of miles away all because it wanted to protect its citizen, and now Russia went to war just to proof that it will not tolerate intrusion in its areas of interest. How much more a big question that is as big as somebody threaten to wipe out a whole nation, sincerely, if I have the power I will attack first.

Israeli Jews are everywhere in Europe and America, powerful, rich and connected and they are using their power to influence the survival of their nation, now tell me who would'nt? If Israel had not gotten all the connections to influence and manipulate the only surviving world power, what would have been their fate today against an enemy that has proved potent not in theory but in reality (1967 Israeli-Arab war). Maybe Israel should wait for another attack. This a nation that has experienced the cruelty of the holocust. I think we all need to be sincere with ourselves, If I were Israel, I will do more in the present circumstance. Afterall international politics is nothing but power politics and for the forseeable future it will contineu to be, because it is the human nature
Re: If Americans Knew - Mission Statement by Afam(m): 12:12am On Sep 13, 2008
I didn't know that the UN supported the illegal invasion of Iraq by the US and Britain, this is really new information, thanks.

So, the arabs have to pay with their lives for what the germans did? Does this make any sense to you?

It seems that you are simply repeating what you have been hearing for quite a long time and as such you cannot see what is happening objectively.

Enjoy, what goes around comes around, I have seen people cry over what they were laughing at when others were involved.

What puzzles me is, if Israelis are not Arabs then how did they get there in the first place? Ah now I see, its the Europeans who carved out another man's land and gave it to outsiders. Its like carving out a place in Ibadan and giving it to say Indians. Indians are not Yoruba's and should not be in Yoruba land in the first place. The Israelis look out of place.

That's a big fat lie!

Don't confuse facts with fiction. If Israel has existed for 3,000 years, then why was there any need to establish a state of Israel in 1948? Did the state of Israel exist in 1947?

Stop confusing the existence of Jews with the existence of Israel, they are not equivalent!

approximates half or more of the jews present in israel today were jews displaced from middle-eastern countries, those jews have retained their middle-eastern culture till this day.

there is also a genetic link among jews and palestinians.

@Afam,

davidylan has an inordinate affection for Israel (not Jews). That's okay. The problem is that his love for the state of Israel (not Jews - I mean, there are thousands of Iranian Jews living in Iran today but davidylan wouldn't mind Israel dropping a nuclear bomb in Iran; those Jews he cares not about!) makes him not reason clearly when it comes to matters concerning Israel.

While I support the fundamental human rights of all peoples, including Arabs, I do not endorse every action of every Arab state. I've criticized Saudi Arabia (for her barbaric legal system that targets the poor, the powerless, women and migrants) and Egypt under the tyrant Hosni Mubarak. However, davidylan has NEVER condemned any of the numerous evil atrocities of the Apartheid state of Israel, not one! Why? Well, they say love is blind!

if israel hadn't come in, that tiny piece of land being fought over would be under egyptian, syrian and jordanian control.  through historical records, the british were prepared to agree to a jordanian annex of palestine(similar to the hong kong handover).  the british ran out with their mandate when the violence got too much.   the arabs never seriously considered an independent palestinian state.

Don't confuse facts with fiction. If Israel has existed for 3,000 years, then why was there any need to establish a state of Israel in 1948? Did the state of Israel exist in 1947?

Actually, Israel has existed for closer to 3500 years. In that case it's more commonly known as the "Land of Israel" and still inextricably linked to Judaism. It can't be argued that the "State of Israel" usurped the the "State of Palestine"as there was no such thing and large numbers of Jews were already present well before the creation of the "State of Israel". They were also already in a state of seige. In 1936, the British Peel Commission concluded that Arab-Jewish coexistence was impossible and recommended partitioning The British Mandate of Palestine into Jewish and Arab areas. The Jews accepted the principle of partition while the Arabs rejected it.

The modern state was created in 1948 with the exodus of Jews from Europe. But this was not a "first" - there were large influxes in 1881 and 1904.

At the very worst you can say that the land belonged to "nobody". Historically, if you rely on an argument of "He who was there the longest" then Israel can't be said to belong to anyone but the Jews. They've had a continual presence there for 3500 years.  Even though there have been continued attempts by both Muslims and Christians to wipe them out.
