Put Cristiano in the Spanish team or even the boring German team and see how he goes.

Ronaldo Lima won all award available in 2002 because of his strong performance at the world cup a 4 weeks tournament. He hardly kicked a ball before and after the tournament.

Zidane won in 2000 on the back of an excellent Euro 2000 cos he had a horrible year before and after the tournament.

Their are precedents to back this up.

We stay with the overall results.
There are points awarded for this awards not just because Messi is likeable by everyone.
In me own opinion. . . . .Ronaldo would garner twice as many points as Messi.
Casillas would come 2nd. . . . . . .Messi has no business competing for Ballon d'Or. . . . He hasn't won anything in Europe for 2 seasons.

There was no outstanding player in Europe in 2004.

Greece took EURO 08.
Henry won EPL's golden boot.
Morientes won UEFA's golden boot.
Henry won the European golden shoe.
Deco led Porto to win UEFA champions league that season.
Henry won Barclays Player of the year.

As u can see, all the major individual awards in 2004 were shared by many players.
However, in 2008, Ronaldo won all the categories i listed above bar EURO 08.

Look at competition years like 2006,2002,2000, 1998, 1996 1994 and check who won the awards. The performer/winner at the tournament won for sure.(Thios favours Casillas)

Whereas in 2004 the award was given to people who did not take part in the tournament as their was no outstanding player then (Thisreasoning favours Messi)
