2008 OLYMPIAD TRIALS REPORT AND PICTURES : ZONE 3 - NIGERIA

"That Nigeria chess players in 3 Continents - Africa, Europe and the United States are taking part in an Olympiad selection process of this magnitude is very remarkable. This fact alone is what makes everyone involve in the process a winner and not only those who will eventually qualify" .

Chess Olympiad Trial: Adegboyega, Jeje Lead others to Final Stage

By Femi Solaja

After four days of brilliant chess display, 12 players (Male and Female) have qualified for the final stage of the World Chess Olympiad trial put together by the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) which was rounded up at the National Stadium, Lagos yesterday.

Adebayo Adegboyega, a veteran of several World Chess Olympiad, showed shade of genus in the middle games as he topped 29 others with 5.5 points out of seven games Swiss-round event in the male section out of which six players qualified for the final stage of the trial.

The other five qualifiers in the category are: Benjamin Omorere also with 5.5 points, Kolade Onabogun (5points), Ajibola Olanrewaju, Charles Campbell and Bomo Kigigha all with five points respectively.

In the final crucial game veteran Campbell exploited his better prowess in Nimzo Indian Defence (b6) on move four over youthful John Fawole who failed to keep the tempo in white colour and a dubious h4 move on 48 gave his opponent's light Bishop a wide control of the board and at the brink of time forfeit cause an exchange of Queens but when the smoke was cleared, the young prodigy was a pawn down and surrendered on move 73.

In the female section, the trio of Elizabeth Coker, Tolu Jeje and Uwa Obasi led the final qualification with five points each while Modupeola Adesanya, Folusayo Togun and veteran Rachael-Edward Dappa all picked the remaining slots for a chance in the final Olympiad trial which will come up next month from 13th-17th at the SWAN Secretariat at the National Stadium, Lagos.

The final trial will be a round robin and will produce three players from each category while the two from Nigeria players(male team) in Diaspora will make up the remaining two to complete the five players that will represent the country at the World Chess Olympiad in Dresden Germany in November.

Footnote:1 female player will also emerge from Diaspora to join the female team.

Zone 1: Europe: Date for the trial to be announced soon.
Zone 2: United States: Trial date is August 22nd-25th,2008 in Houston,Texas

PLEASE NOTE: Its no longer 4,2 2 its now 3,1 1.
3 Male chess players from Nigeria, 1 from Europe and 1 from the United States.

THE 2008 NIGERIA OLYMPIAD TRIALS: ZONE 2, UNITED STATES: ROUND 1

EXPRESS REPORT: Ten chess players are competing in the zone 2 trials with 4 officials working to see that the best chess player emerge in this 5 round Swiss tournament. The chessplayers present in Houston for the event are Toyin Gbenle, Kenneth Odeh, Yomi Odutola, NM George Umezinwa, I'm Oladapo Adu, Ayo Oguntuase, Okechukwu Iwu, Sylvester Smarty, Ayokunle Aladeselu and Ola Osanyinjobi. Four of the expected players could not make it due to unforeseeable circumstances.

The Chief Tournament Director is Franc Guadalupe - US Tournament director. Franc is an experience arbiter who has officiated in many US tournaments including the US Opens. He is assisted by Quayle Johnson, a delegate member of the US Chess Federation and a member of the Houston Chess Club. Coordinating the event are Dr Jide Falana and Adekunle Elegbede. The tournament is going to be US Chess Federation and World Chess Federation (FIDE) rated.

So far, this Olympiad trial has lived up to its expectations. The highlight of the first round was the game between the 1992 Olympiad veteran Kenneth Odeh and George Umezinwa, a past winner of the US World Opens. George won this game even though Kenneth put on tremendous pressure on George throughout the game. Another interesting game was between Dr Okechuhwu Iwu and Aladeselu Ayokunle. This was very explosive and nerve wrecking to say the least.

Detail analysis of the games is underway. You can also see them on the Chess drum.

ZUGZWANG with me?! Whenever you want to battle, nairaland is a spot we can always mate it out. cool

Every chess player I have ever battled with, ALWAYS has to make mouth! Is Odion still in active chess competition? I also read of one 8 year old Nigerian boy who is on his way to becoming a GrandMaster. I know he is Igbo, but I cannot recall the name again.

There used to be a chess blogsite by a Nigerian where I read regular updates on latest events within the Nigerian chess circle. Do you have a link to that blogsite? undecided

I love leaving people to analyze my game once I am through with dealing with fishes. Nothing makes me more happy when you go back and analyze how I was able to mate you. What excellent sacrifices did I make? What sequestration of moves did I make? What GAMBIT did I play to? cheesy

And I have found that game applicable and practical even to my existence and ways of doing things in life.

So what does that make me? A LIVING CHESS on its own!!!!!

By far, Odion is one of the most colorful of all the Nigerian Chess Players and the most entertaining. One international Chess commentator once referred to him as the "Young Casius Clay of chess" for his constant chatter while playing speed chess which is called blitz’s. Odion, with his fast thinking ability, often jokes that his opponents seem to like "to loose to him" which is the reason he often wins. This is very modest of him to say the least. Of course, everyone knows how talented Odion is with his far reaching tactical insight which often leaves his opponents gasping for air after the game is over so quickly

MEAN WHILE A SENARIO PLAYED ITS SELF OUT AFTER THE QUALIFICATIONS HAS DECIDED THE WINNER IN THE USA ZONE, CHIKWERE G.ONYEKWERE  who was absent in the event posted the following comments, on chessdrum!!

7CHIKWERE.G.ONYEKWERE
It was clear from the biginning that Oladapo Adu was going to win this, and i assume the whole process was to pick the very best chess player from this zone to represent Nigeria at the Olympiad. With all due respect to everyone involve,i don’t think that is the case here,as i’m very confident that i would win the tournament if i had taken part.To prove this,i’m calling Mr.Oladapo Adu to a match for that spot!I think this representative should prove himself in every way,and i know alot of people will really like to see that matchup too.
The stage has been set,and i am ready to prove this.
CHIKWERE.G.ONYEKWERE
NIGERIAN NATIONAL CHAMPION!!![/b

from Kenneth Odeh

The tournament was a great success and leads me to suggest we put together a national tournament so that everybody can benefit from the excellence showed by the organisers.
As regards any kind of match with Dapo Adu. It cannot have anything to do with selection for the world chess Olympiad. That would make a mockery of all our efforts in attending this event and would be a monumental insult to Nigerian chess players and their effort to find solutions to our unique chess circumstances.
The qualifier for the national chess team to Dresden USA zone is complete and final and the representative is Dapo Adu.
Congrats to Dapo for some excellent games and the courage to put both his Fide and National rating on the line against many lower rated players. let us Support IM Adu in his efforts to become a grandmaster.
The younger pretenders to the throne still have to prove themselves to deserve respect and continued support from our chess players.

14CHIKWERE.G.ONYEKWERE
In response to the statement from Kenneth Odeh,i do not have any point to prove against low rated1500 and 1600 players or even 1800 players. That was more of a get together tournament you guys had,and it doesn’t prove anything! If you want to have an Olympiad trials, then it should be done in the proper way,and not inviting players i can give a queen odds, that is an insult to me too.So i really do not care what ever you guys say or think about me,i do not play chess to please you guys!

Re: Nairaland Official Chess Thread! by chessguru(m): 10:13pm On Oct 05, 2008
REPLY from Kenneth Odeh (posted on same chess drum)
Chikwere the best answer to a challenge is to proof yourself. To make a statement that insults a group of players most whom you do not know is a really bad move. It shows very poor taste and limited education.
Most of us have little or no knowledge of who you are as a chess player. My only memory of you is some guy calling me with demands and stories of financial hardships.
Now if you showed any talent or have any prospect as a chess player I would be more concerned with you. But I truely believe that you are not going to make anything of yourself not just in chess but in life if you do not change your attitude and develop some humility and common sense. Again if I was you and some one spoke about my prospects in life in such a dismissive way. I would do everything I can to proof him wrong.
If I sound like I am talking to a child it is because you are conducting yourself like one. I am going to request an unconditional apology from you to every chess player in that tournament you just insulted. You will make that apology both on the Nigerian chess forum and on chess drum. If I do not see such an apology posted there as quickly as you responded to my post. You will pay a high prize for your poor move in the Nigeria chess community.
People make mistakes but part of the maturing process is carrying the cross for your mistakes. I hope you are man enough to bear that cross. Nigerian chess has no need for your type of person. Note I did not say chess player. We are not just interested in the chess player but also the person. We have no desire to mix with the dregs of society and hoodlums. So if you want to associate with the likes of people you saw at that tournament. You have to first of all begin by trying to get a college education and learning some manners.
Accept this as some free fatherly advice from someone old enough to be your father. Please also stop talking about giving queen odds to anyone. The last time I heard about you giving any kind of odds you ended up flat on your stomach begging for everything including parts of your clothes. After I finished laughing at the stories of you and chess odds, I said we all done that and I sure hope he grows up.
Again you have no real chess achievements worthy of comment and I doubt you have the character that is required to achieve success. I would be happy to see you proof me wrong. I am not going to hold my breath waiting for that day. You have a long way to go. Just go ahead and post that apology and I would make an effort to get you forgiveness from the others you insulted.

Gentlemen,
Enough of this already. Let us all chill a little. Enough has been said that is not desirable and thefore it is important not to continue with this on the blog if you don’t mind. We have to think twice before we put anything in writing especially insulting things . I suppose the rule of blogging is to be courteous to others.

As for the Nigeria - US trial, it is over with. IM Dapo Adu is the winner and will be going to the Olympiad without any challenge of any sort. There may be other tournaments in the future even before the Olympiad, but it’s not going to be for the Olympiad selection and the way to organize such an event is not dragging it out on the blog. It takes hard work and proper planning.

However, the European leg of the Nigerian trial is still open and anyone can still participate in that. We made that clear long time ago. Anyone from any zone can participate in any trial from any zone. The zoning of this event is just for the convenience of the players at this late stage of the Olympiad selection. I do understand how emotions can sometime be high in a matter like this, but we have to think twice before we say anything that we may regret later.

I trust you will take my one cent advice and let peace reign.

Best regards,

Kenneth,u can go to hell, and u will not get any apology from me no matter how long you wait.If you got insulted,it was because you couldn’t control your big mouth, and you’re not old enough to be my father too.Talking about achievements in chess,u’ve been playing chess since i was born, and u’re still in the 1800’s.I do not play chess to please you,and i wasn’t gonna come to Houston to see your scary face too.If i made a comment earlier not directed to you,and you decided to open your big mouth, then you deserve every insult you got.And you know what, about the players too,i wasn’t refering to Dr.Smarty,Iwu,Ola,Umezinwa and Ayodele, but u’re definately among the 1800’s!and you can go to hell, for i really don’t care.Just in case you don’t know,i’m be 23 very soon, and by the time i get to your age,i’ll be doing better than you are now.
So once again, you can go to hell!

Kunle Elegbede
All I know is that Nigerian chess players are brilliant and talented people. Yes, there has been a lot of problems in the chess development in Nigeria but that will be over soon. There will be plenty of opportunity for everyone to play in so many chess tournaments that the best players will emerge while many others will improve every time they play. As long as we retain the proper decorum , we would remain winners together. Again It’s over now. Let’s move on to other more positive subjects such as how we can organize more tournaments and help chess players obtain GM norms. Competition is good for everyone but insult is self defeating . You are all wonderful people and you should remain that way

to Chikwere,

I’m sorry this has become personal and I feel your frustration. Believe me, everyone would have liked for you to have been there to compete. It was highly-anticipated. I was under the impression that you intended to travel to Houston and play under the agreed format and rules. I’m not sure of your own reasons for not attending, but this event was historic nevertheless. Chikwere, this idea is for the future of Nigerian chess (of which you are a part) and the idea is not limited to choosing someone for Dresden. It has a far deeper purpose.

All of the players competing in the qualifier sacrificed for the future of Nigerian chess… even the one 1500 player. Many of these players are very busy otherwise, but they traveled to Houston to play. Kenneth Odeh (airline pilot), Dr. Okey (physician), Dr. Smarty (psychiatrist) are accomplished in their careers and that alone should make you feel some pride. In addition, all have sacrificed and paved the way for young Nigerian talents… like yourself.

George Umezinwa is a class act and as humble as they come. He most certainly would be appalled and that may not concern you, but there is something to be said about respect for predecessors. Remember when Garry Kasparov wrote about the previous World Champions in his impressive series? He didn’t try to put down the predecessors by saying he was stronger. He praised their efforts and accomplishments because he knew he stood on their shoulders to get where he is.

Regardless of what you think of Kenneth and/or his chess abilities, let’s cease with the war of words because they are not useful here. He is an Olympiad predecessor and both of you are inextricably bound. Let’s rejoice in the fact that this past weekend, Nigeria set an example for the chess world and Kunle Elegbede conducted the event with class and efficiency. He spared no expense into making this a successful event and I understand he worked hard to accommodate the players.

Looking from outside in, the entire world was proud of the Nigerian chess community and was pleased to see the event conducted in such a fashion. Unfortunately you were unable to attend this qualifier, but there will be others. At 23, you will certainly be representing Nigeria many times in the future. However, when you get to the top, remember you are standing on the shoulders of those before you. Put your personal interests aside at this time and think of Nigeria’s chess future. It is bright… make it brighter. One day someone will stand on your shoulders.

I do not want to inflame this situaton further, but I have to say this. Chi-chi, you owe an apology to everyone that you insulted, intentionally or not, by your comments earlier. It may have been said in the heat of the moment, for whatever reason, it does not matter to the people offended. I believe it was Maya Angelou who said that people may not remember exactly what you said to them, but they will remember exactly how you made them feel.

It is a mark of maturity for a man to accept when he is wrong, and make amends. Here is your chance …

To those whom comments were not approved, it was done to avoid fanning the flames further. Enough ill-will had been spread. Chikwere is passionate about chess and in time he will know how to channel his energy to move on a path of success. He have to help him, but he also has to help himself. His admission shows he’s on the right track.

, chi-chi and too much noise!! meanwhile in 2007 (far back) CHI-CHI in houston texax, a match between Nigerian Champion Chikwere Onyekwere and Nigeria's IM Oladapo Adu. The match was organized by Kunle Elegbede ended 31/2- 11/2 in Dapo's favor!! could it be that Chi-chi wants a kind of rematch to keep the records try and avenge the loss, since that match i think chi chi has gathered some experience, Lets just wait and see how things turn out ffor nija players both in and outside the country!! no quarell lets leave chi chi to grow. he is still kinda impressionable.

, i remember playing chikwere once in national sports festival, though i had nothing to lose in the game i played a variation i later implored agaist another former junior national champion fawole john, sacrificing my knight for three pawns on c5 as white in a sicilian position, i lost the first to inexperience/fatigue at that time even after having a winning position, and the second i accepted a draw also in a wining position/positional ghost hunt
N x c5 !! - Chessguru   (i hope to be back to the board soon, stronger and better)

The chess thread continues, chess is immortal!!

Why chess?
Why not! Chess is a fun game with relatively easy to learn rules. This game can help you develop your ability to solve everyday problems, it can help you become more patient. After all, this is a game that relies on the mind's ability to find solutions to problems

Long live the game called CHESS!!!!!

I remember in those days, myself and my brother did not eat for two good days. We spent morning afternoon and night and midnight blooding eachother out. Playing dangerous sacs on each other.

The days of BRILLIANCE, and even spectators would be wondering why did he play that variation!!!! grin

I love that game and I am so happy I am a good player at that.

Introduction

Welcome to the wonderful world of chess!! Chess is a fascinating activity enjoyed by millions across the globe and has been played for more than 1400 years. You may ask, "Why do people like chess so much… isn't chess boring?" Not at all!! Some are attracted to the excitement of combat occurring between the chess armies on the board. For me it was because of the mental challenge and yes, the excitement! I attended a large Chicago public high school with 100 trash-talking players in the chess club so it was easy to get excited.

To the uninitiated, chess seems to lack action, but this is not the case at all. Most sports emphasize physical movement and scoring points in some fashion. In chess, there is no tallying of points during the game, but the object of the game is to attack and trap the opponent's king such that it cannot escape danger or "checkmate." Scoring in chess is based on one of three results: win (1 point), draw (½ point), and loss (0 points

Chess is not very hard to learn. After being amazed at two friends playing at night under a lamp, the next morning I picked up an encyclopedia and began learning the moves. It only takes a few hours learning the rules properly. What's a few measly hours in exchange for a lifetime of enjoyment? Chess is unique combination of warfare, art, science, and sport making it enjoyable for people of all ages, ethnic and social backgrounds, and personalities. Contrary to the media's erroneous "nerd" image of chess players, there is no set profile… not even close. Whether you're new to chess and would like to learn how to play, or you already know the rules and would like to learn more, please study the lessons below. Enjoy!!!

HOW TO PLAY CHESS BASIC RULES

The chess board is made up of 64 squares in contrasting colors. The chess board is divided by eight horizontal ranks (from numbers 1-cool and eight vertical files (from letters a-h) so that each of the 64 squares on the board can be identified. The board also has diagonals (from h1 to a8 for example). In the first diagram below, the e4 square is a light-colored square intersecting the 4th rank and the e-file. In the second diagram, the a7 square is the dark-colored square intersecting the 7th rank and the a-file. This square has a pawn occupying

This method of identifying squares is used when keeping score and is called algebraic notation. In this notation each piece (except for the pawn) is identified by a letter. The King="K" Queen="Q" Rook="R" Bishop="B" Knight='N". For example, the move "Nf3" means the Knight will move to the f3-square. Feel free to view the following game to get an idea of the board and how the notation works (Thompson-Blood, 1874).

Look at the initial positioning of the facing armies. Two important rules should be learned here. The board should be positioned so that the white or lighter-colored square is always on the lower right-hand corner. In addition, always remember to place the queen on her color… light queen on lighter-colored square and dark queen on the darker-colored square. Remember, "white on right… queen on her color."

Each chess game starts with two identical armies of contrasting colors. The lighter-colored army is considered "white," and the darker-colored army is considered "black." In these armies, each distinct piece has a function. The movements will be described in more detail in following lessons. Below is a chart giving the value of each piece.

THE CHESS MEN- THE ROOK

The Rook is a very powerful piece and it is sometimes called a castle (because of its looks). It is known in the medieval days that powerful cannons were fired from the top of the castles to keep invaders away. Thus, in Diagram #1, the rook attacks in a straight line either from top to bottom (vertically along files) or side to side (horizontally along ranks). In Diagram #2, the black rook can move as far as there is nothing blocking its path. The black rook can capture the white pawn on e2 or the white knight on g5 by removing the piece and taking control of that square. However, the rook cannot jump over the white knight on g5 to capture the white rook on h5.

Best positioning of Rook

The rook belongs on open files and ranks for swift movement. Rooks are best placed toward the center of the board because the central files usually open up very quickly. In addition, it is good to have rooks "doubled" on the same file or rank to strengthen the attacking power. In Diagram #3, the two rooks have a powerful attack along the e-file. In Diagram #4, these same rooks have reached a "dream position" and are now doubled along the 7th rank threatening to capture all of the black pawns. Incidentally, there is something called a "super-Rook," but let's hope you never need one. More on that later.
