Please, Clearing/ Forwarding Agents, Customs officers and other Nairalanders in the house. 50/60% of valuable items are always missing from my vehicle anytime l shipped to Nigeria, have tried several agents after the death of my main agent(may his gentle soul rest in peace)but same sad stories. This keeps me wondering WHO ARE THE THIEVES AT THE PORT? Am sick and tired of being ripped of my hard-earned money.

Let m explain something here, customs don't take anything except they request for it from ur while taking delivery of any job out port. Or during examination, the people involve in the situation are first the drivers who drive d vehicles from the ship to d discharge port where it'll be located for examination, secondly the clearing. Agent tooo, this happens when d agent drive d vehicle home before u pick up,or even it might happen immediately vehicle is out of port, but to b sincere customs don't take or manover importerrs good,it the handwork of either drivers or agent, but mostly it's d drivers during night transfer, but I tell u dat there are many good agent who are not after ur goods, like I. Always hate. Embarrassment of such thing from. Customers calling m his or. Hers goods was vanderlised, its always a shame to respond to that, but GOD will help us sir

there are security,i. Think u need to draft a letter to the terminal manager to complain about it,like state protection. By agent priority is when the. Vehicle is in d agent possession not. In terminal,so if ur brother could be at the point of bringing the car out which means stolen goods are been taking inside by one. Of the terminal official workers, like I said their drivers and when an agent can take anything from ur consignment is when he has the vehicle in his possession, like I said. Again drafft a. Letter to the. Terminal manager since u still observe it again while ur brother inside the terminal during delivery bcus agent. Are search after the examination

@ oliverjaid, good point.

This happened to me recently. I took a delivery of a bus, FIAT Ducato, loaded with used cloths and shoes. Thank God the owner was outside the Terminal waiting to receive the vehicle. The moment he sited the level of the load, he started shouting and got seriously bittered, I was embarrassed and confused.

When he saw my mood, he's apologetic and told me he understand I can't be responsible because the only thing on me as he saw me drive out is just the vehicle document. That he could not understand the level of theft, and said the vehicle was 'fully loaded' but was just more than half when it was out. I Was surprised too!

I took time to explained to him and options he has, he took the picture, call the shipper on the spot and left. He still remains committed because of trust he has in me.

In summary, bulk of the theft are done in the Terminal as already said. However, I am not absolving agents of this, it is some bad 'heads' of such that labelled agents 'rogue and mischievous' which is far from the truth.

I am an agent and I know what I am saying, I detest Pilferage with everything.

The advice is, 'learn before you leap'. 'Fast, cheap, and Reliable' aren't the same thing.

@sheffyUTD
what are you agents doing about the thefts at the terminal?

We have constituted authority (excos) that liaise with them (Terminal operators). Frequents complains to them has made some Terminals take bold security step. For instance instalation of camera has reduced that among the Terminals employees, but more need to be done in monitoring the dock workers.

We will continue to complain to them. It's not agents burden alone however, as importers too should voice out to them when needed.

Thanks for your understanding

is this kinda post, responses that get me somehow glued to Nairaland... I cant believe I read all the posts on this thread. It was like an exchange of letters or emails ....

a client voicing his frustration out on suspecting thieves in the Naija wharf terminals parading as agents or terminal workers, some supposedly honest ones amongst these agents jumped out to clear the air for this client, and somehow was not not just only able to calm him down, but boldly opting to take responsibility of the clients clearing henceforth .... lol

front page material if you ask me!

nice one guys!

@Oliverjiad, with due respect I can't seem to comprehend anything from this your write-up oh. The puncuations are improperly placed, the tenses are improperly used. No hard feelings oh, just my observation.

Cheers.

They almighty wharf rats at work!!!!!

The only solution is to ensure your vehicle does not stay more than 48-72 hours at the port before you move it out.

smartchoice: Agents, wharf/shipping line workers, and ship workers....but ask femmy2010...he should have an expository view, if he is willing to share.

frankly, all of the above are guilty to varying extents.
the bulk of the pilfering are done by dock/Terminal workers when vehicles are in the terminals or when been trucked or driven into the terminals and i have also seen fellow Customs agents steal items from vehicle they cleared for clients (it is that bad).
My advise to importers is as stated below

1 - Make sure to transact with tested hands
2 - Make sure to get BOL and fund to your agent at least 2days to the ETA of your consignment in Lagos.
3 - If possible, you or your representative should be on ground to see your consignment comes out from the terminals on the expected delivery day
4 - If you must load personal items in a vehicle shipped RORO,please use Grimaldi shipping line

Follow those advise and i assure that your lose would be minimal
