Nigerian Parenting VS Western Parenting (which Do You Prefer) by continentalceo(m): 1:57pm On Jul 25, 2014
Our kids this days especially the teenage ones, want us to adopt the Western (the child is free to do anything and get away with it) system of child upbringing.. Our teenager want us to forget our "spare the rod and spoil the child" pattern..
Pls share your opinion on the matter thanks.

LOL@ "the child is free to do anything and get away with it system of child upbringing"

I think I know where you stand grin

As for me, I wasn't subject to the iron rod *ever. My older brothers had been disciplined in that way, so I guess my parents' discipline style must had went through some changes by the time I was born.

I will not beat my children. Through watching my nieces and nephews, and through my own experience, I view it as unnecessary. When deciding the form of discipline it's important to consider the child.

crackhaus: I prefer the one I went through, Nigerian parenting.

i can argue against both with strong points. nigerian parenting is too extreme & the western parenting is too liberal. the best is to take a bit of both & apply logically.

You're right...
The Nigerian parenting I went through however wasn't as extreme as you might put it, it was definitely not liberal as well.

Given a balance, I would prefer leaning more towards the Nigerian-styled parenting (keeping it away from the extreme though) than settling for the more liberal western-styled parenting.

it's not everyday that you get to be on point, but the above is ON POINT! cool

The Nigerian system that leaves you with the resilience to survive anywhere is a golden attribute every child should have.

True and also to study what works best for the child in question.

Some archaic and annoying Nigerian parenting, as well as some extreme and loose western parenting here and there.

A balance of the two would be ideal. cool

it depends on the standard by which you are looking at both sides of it. what do you consider extreme? if they try all nigerian parents in the court of western countries, all of them would go to jail for gross child abuse.

which resilience?
what has that system given us? where's our own einstein or zuckerberg? our system limits us, we cannot even ask questions because our elders are always right even when they are talking bullshyte. our system teaches us to be silent, timid, respectful - kids cannot learn from that.

but you have to agree the western system is too soft & often bothers on stüpidity. are you aware holding a child's hand firmly while crossing the road is child abuse in the UK? some parents got their kids taken from them because they held the kids too firmly........

can you beat that? cheesy

No one is TOTALLY desirable.
Take the best from each and form the best from both!
They both have good things to offer! kiss

Depends solely on the child and build up.

By build up I mean the founation used to train the child. If you are the fire bridage parent, please stick to naija style.

If you want to train your kids, you fit copy oyinbo in Nigerian setting (aka there is still the room to beat when need be cool)

Emboldened is actually funny...not all maybe, but a considerable number.

What I consider extreme is summarily any punishment that inflicts 'excessive' physical pain.

so which group of nigerian parents would escape the long arms of the law? which nigerian parent doesn't yell at their kids, which of them doesn't invade their kid's privacy? verbal abuse? physical abuse? horrible errands here & there nko?

abeg.....all the parents in nigeria will be in prison for decades. grin

Yelling, invading privacy, and sending kids on errands are not totally extreme. I can't say the same for physical/verbal abuse.

they are very extreme. yelling is verbal abuse. kids get beaten at home, they get thrashed in schools by some sadist teachers. the abuse of a nigerian child starts from infanthood to adulthood. if the child is unlucky, the abuse is life-long.

Tell me that isn't true. Insane!
Meanwhile, some immigrant parents are drawing their blinds and shutting their windows to indulge in an angry beating session.
