I can't agree with u dat all this maps including google map are wrong buh i can't back it up. let's assume you're right, are we supposed to go to space ourselves to check it out? so we just have to use and believe whatever they want us to.

How could u be sure dat dose maps are wrong? did u go there urself?
How do we know that there are 9 planets? or that the solar system exists at all? cos we haven't been there.
How do we know that elements called hydrogren, helium e.t.c in chemistry exists at all? cos we can't see them.
How do we know that electrons are negative while protons are positive? or dat dey exist at all? cos we can neither see nor touch them.

All this things are things, they told us and we believed it. So let's just accept the generally accepted map. who knows if earth is spherical at all?

This distortion are minimal on globe maps.

As for misdirection by Google maps, sorry bro it's not totally Google's fault. People add places to Google maps manually since Google can not differentiate a hotel from a bank or worse still a poultry. Someone probably told Google that that building is a bank. This happens a lot especially to Nigeria since only few people contribute. Computers are not so smart. Are they?
You can make a positive contribution by indicating to Google maps that that place no be bank.

If the current map is wrong, how come the view of earth from space by astronauts and satellites always look similar to how the world map looks?

Maybe OP means that globes that used to be in my primary school classes were wrong.. Maybe.. Just maybe i might think it twice.. But to reason that up till now.. Scientists are still lying about maps is funny.. If they are.. Why is longitude and latitude able to get a location with a pin point accuracy?

Syenite: The Mercator projection could have been effected due to the sphericity of the Earth. When u are positioned for instance at d equator and look towards the North pole it will seem as if the continents taper with increased offsets from the eaquator. This tapering results in an apparent reduction in size of the continents towards the North Pole.
Mercator projection was was used to correct for this effect. However it later came to the realization of cartographers that the Mercator projection has an over correction effect on the world map, thereby making the continents towards the North and South Pole bigger than they really are.
