There was panic aboard an Aero Contractors Flight from Lagos to Kano on Wednesday, when a passenger raised a fire alarm aboard the flight.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that when the aircraft was about to take-off at about 6.30am, the passenger, who sat by one of the emergency exits, raised an alarm and proceeded to disembark from the craft through the exit.

An eyewitness, who did not want his name in print, told our correspondent that the action brought a lot of confusion on board the plane as the other passengers began to panic.

“At the end, the officials had to ask the other passengers to disembark, and the craft was thoroughly checked,” he said.

He told our correspondent that the airline later provided another plane that took the passengers to their destination.

The passenger was taken by security operatives for interrogation and was later detained.

Efforts by our correspondent to reach the spokesperson for Aero, Mr. Simon Tunba, for comment were unsuccessful as calls to his mobile set weren’t going through, and a text message sent to him was not responded to as of press time.

The General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Fan Ndubuoke, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, said it was a false alarm.

He said, “Investigations revealed that what the passenger saw was actually smoke from a nearby generator, which was used to power a system not connected to the plane. So, he jumped out through the emergency exit, and all the other passengers were also asked to disembark.

“Eventually, a new aircraft was brought to take the passengers down to Kano, so that they would be at ease, while the passenger, who raised the alarm was detained and interrogated.

He saw a smoke from a Generator and that is not enough for someone who is not so familiar on how things work around the airport to raise an alarm. They had better free the guy! If i were the one, i will equally raise alarm seeing a smoke i don't even know where its source is. y'all should read the story and tell me if the guy is guilty

Meanwhile, what is a generator doing on a tarmac ? In my history of entering planes, i have never seen a power generator close to a plane before not to talk of powering something in it. They had better come out clean with this and free the poor guy.
