Osun governorship elections will be very free, fair and credible” – Jonathan

Talatu Usman - 5 days ago

FEATURED NEWS, NEWS

“The issue of credible elections must be institutionalised in Nigeria.”

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday in Washington DC pledged to ensure that Saturday’s governorship election in Osun is “very free, fair, and credible.”

Mr. Jonathan said that the days when a few politicians, acting in concert with their hirelings and thugs, hijack voters cards and other electoral materials, and manipulate the outcome of elections to their personal advantage are gone forever in Nigeria.

Speaking at a meeting with Nigerian professionals in the United States, Mr. Jonathan said that he remained fully committed to keeping the promise he made in 2011 that he will do everything possible to ensure that the elections in Nigeria become very free, fair and credible.

The President told the gathering that in keeping with that pledge, which he said has been fulfilled in recent elections in Edo, Ondo and Ekiti states, the federal government will take all necessary steps to ensure that no individual, group or political party is able to thwart the legitimate choice of genuine voters in Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.

“The issue of credible elections must be institutionalised in Nigeria. Our electoral processes were not very good or credible when we came into office, but as I promised, we have been working very hard to change things and ensure that our elections are more credible, that every legitimate vote counts and that results are acceptable to the electorate.

“I promise you that the Osun governorship elections will be very free, fair and credible,” he said.

Mr. Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and it’s candidate, Iyiola Omisore, is the major challenger to the incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

One thing you can't take away from GEJ is his struggle to ensure a free and fair elections. I've never seen the increased spate of fair elections in any tenure like that of GEJ. Even his haters can't deny this. GEJ is a proponent of fair elections. Kudos GEJ. cool

I'm not from Osun state so I don't give a damn about who becomes the Governor there. However, I am sick of the hypocrisy of the opposition party APC, who see's everything wrong with the federal government when things are not in their favour but play dumb when the process favours them. They play politics of bitterness and hatred , always playing victim to get sympathy from the masses. Non the less, I congratulate Mr Aregbeshola on his victory and urge him to fulfil his electoral promises to the people of Osun state.

GEJ didn't deliver any free and fair election. PDP/GEJ's plan and efforts to rig were countered by people turning out en mass to vote against them and defend their votes.

Or what is fair in arresting opposition leaders on the eve of election and on election day. And what is free and fair in using thugs and militants (masked men) to monitor election all in the name of providing security?

Nonsense, I think its time we stop thanking this bastards for doing their job, that is what's they elected to do, how can we keep celebrating, building of schools, road in this modern age, what else are they elected and paid to do?

A quick scan through your previous posts on different subjects reveals that you both (or 2-in1) have the habit of raining insults on people who don't agree with your line of thoughts.

So, I will be wasting my time if I try to engage you further. When you've learnt how to conduct yourself (or yourselves) in a public forum like NL without embarassing your families, I might engage you in proper discussion.

For once, take away the pain and hate for GEJ in your heart and criticise constructively. If this was a job well done by an APC candidate, you'd have opened a thread and showered the candidate with unheard praises. But since it's GEJ, your hate must manifest.

Of course it's their job, and they shouldn't be praised for it, but in a country where past leaders have nothing to show but corruption and rigged elections, when a new leader truncates such bad practices and decides to be a true democrat and give fair and free elections, he deserve all the praises, because it's not easy!!
