Thief Obasanjo pulled a scam on Nigeria.

He didn't reduce our debt and he gave away our land

Thief Obasanjo had 11 good year Abacha had 4.5 years our problemis not oil,our problem is leaders like Thief Obasanjo who has instituted both our periods of civilian rule 1979 and 1999
bushdoc9919:

So too did Obasanjo.

But both of them still left the cause in place....oil dependency and a lack of industry.

Billyonaire: The ignorant poor sees debt as a death sentence, but the educated affluent sees debt as growing credit rating and opportunity to borrow more and expand.

Not necessarily correct all the time; and not especially when you are a consuming and import-driven economy like ours.

There are many economies with budget surplus year-in year-out and they are able to dictate lending terms whenever they have to borrow. If we continue at this rate, we will soon find ourselves in the similar mess we were about 3 years back.

Ofcourse bor, I took Sanusi VERY serious because the Government only used intimidation to sweep the matter. I expected the Government(If they are sincere) to appoint foreign forensic accountants and Auditors to look into the books of NNPC, Petroleum Ministry and CBN. Anyway, we all know that we are operating a Government of Fraud

The debt isn't a problem if we uses it to create sustainable infrastructure that can offset the very debt. The worry is that the huge borrowing borrowing is not commensurate with the infrastructure and services on ground. It would be wrong to say that the government isn't doing something with these fund, I think the right thing to say is they are not doing enough.

The kind of projects they embark on too is key I saw pics of GEJ inspecting the stadium built in uyo, left to me that project is a totaly unpeopled centered, the states of all our stadiums in the country bear will definitely support my stance. If the govonor had used the funds to generate 1000mw of electricity As the site is close to a gas field, the state will have been called light city by now and imagine the revenue it will generate for the state, the jobs it will create for the citizens, and the national popularity the govonor will get.

From the statistics shown Lagos state has the largest state debt I can understand that the population of Lagos is ever increasing but I still can't see the infrastructure supporting this huge debts.

Citizens of Nigeria have to start demanding accountability from the government else posterity will be in creditors chain.

The debt situation is worrying but most Nigerians won't support measures that will curtail the debt - removing subsidy, restraint on public sector wages.

Corruption is the only issue where everyone agrees on but it has become a red herring - bone headed policies like fuel subsidy are justified because "until we end corruption, politicians can't be trusted with the subsidy savings."

You still don't get it.
Nigeria's current GDP is $510b.
Nigeria’s population is estimated to be around 165 million.
When you divide the GDP by the population it will give you the per capita income.
Example: $510,000,000,000/165,000,000 = 3090 that's $3090
I was conservative with the statistics because we are still dealing with estimated population figures.

Bazinga: PDP o. they want to bankrupt nigeria. 2015 is behind the corner, here is an advice for u all

Why are so many of us very DUMB and have no iota of reading and COMPREHENSION skills as to render us CLUELESS and still brag about it
Why?
The very first paragraph of the OP had this:

Nigeria’s total debt stock has again risen to a very high level of N10.4 trillion as at June 2014. The rising debt profile of the country is made up of external debt stock of N1.46 trillion ($9.377 billion), Federal Government domestic debt of N7.421 trillion ($47.653billion).
States in the federation have a domestic debt stock of N1.551 trillion or $9.963 billion. The Federal Government’s share of the rising external debt stands at $6.363 billion.

Therefore the 36 states have accumulated $3.014 billion EXTERNAL debt in addition to local debt by these same 36 states of N1.551 trillion.
REASONABLE citizens would be asking what have these states done with the money since there has been little or no improvement in:

- primary, VOCATIONAL, secondary and TECHNICAL schools quantity (enrolment) and quality (teacher/laboratory/library seats:students RATIO)
- TAP water provision.
- health clinics and general hospitals adequately equipped & staffed with PROFESSIONALS instead of annual recycling of youth corpers.
- FEEDER/INNER roads

Compared to the Jonathan/Sambo federal administration that has made real progress delivering on infrastructure, territorial defence and international representation of the country.

No wonder we have these LOOTERS as governors, LGA chairmen and legisLOOTERS whom we praise, worship and adore as we seek to get our own "breakthroughs" via access to these people who DEPRIVE us of BASIC things of life even as they mortgage our future generations with heavy debt burdens shocked shocked

Yet, FOOL'ISH as we are know how to abuse Obama and the US for not giving our LAZY bums ebola drugs that they have RESEARCHED many decades to come up with in their SCIENTIFIC laboratories.
We dull nor be small, I swear angry shocked

And I am telling you that average Nigerian DON'T earn N495,000 per year. That will tell you that the so called GDP is "BOGUS". The Gross National Income of Nigeria is laughable. The Gross National Product is abysmal. My Friend both our GNI and GNP that forms integral part of a country's development is nothing to write home about. It is not popular to say this but public sector wages are higher than the economy can support. The proof is in the fact that we spend 70% of the FG's budget on recurrent expenditure - largely personnel costs.

You can also compare Nigerian public sector wages to wages of other countries who have a similar level of per capita income. You will find that Nigerian public servants are actually and relatively well remunerated.

This is fine if you are a university lecturer or a doctor but 99% of Nigerians are neither public sector workers or politicians.

To get to a fiscally sustainable path, we need to tackle corruption and the state wage bill. The country needs investment in infrastructure and education. When you hear that Ghana needs an IMF bailout, it is the state wage bill that provided the knockout blow.

barcanista: This report has confirmed my earlier position that Jonathan is operating a Government of Fraud. When President Obasanjo came to Power, Nigeria's External debt was $35bn. President Obasanjo successfully cleared the debt and left a Reserve of about $45bn. In contrast Jonathan has depleted the Reserve and has punged us into a huge debt.

Jonathan must be kicked out of power in 2015
True.
But you know Nigerians are very greedy and tribalistic.
GEJ is the worst president to ever rule Nigeria.
A clue less confused stúpid thief. Yes! I said it - make dem come arrest me.
Those thieves in the Niger Delta: Asari, Tompolo and many hopeless and jobless youths that gej is currently giving chicken changes won't want gej to be kicked out so that they can continue milking this country.
I know gej could win next election but, I pray he does not finish the term.
