What would you do?


Sexting is the "cool" thing to do among many teens and tweens. As a parent would you have a problem with this?


The parents said that they called in the sheriff’s office to protect their daughter even though she could face criminal charges.


“We did this now to protect her for now and in the future, because this could get worse. She could be taken,” she said.


Commonwealth’s Attorney Lisa Caruso said there are other options for the teen, not necessarily going through the court system.


“What’s called diversion in the juvenile justice system. That’s a 12 week program and it would be group classes. The parents would get involved [and] there would be some counseling,” Caruso said.


However, the older teens could face felony charges depending on their ages.


The mother said while some may criticize their decision to go to sheriff’s investigators, they did so out of fear. They did not want someone to see the pictures and try to find their daughter.


“What she’s facing may be harsh, but we feel it’s for her own protection,” the mother said.


And the mother has important advice for other parents to keep their children from accessing dangerous apps.


“Please put parental controls on everything. I was informed that if you take it to the store… wherever store you buy it from, they can put all kinds of locks and controls in place, so that they can’t access these apps,” she said.

I commend the girl's parents for their actions towards protecting their daughter. Who knows, a potential stalker, who gets her pic may cause some harm to her.

Me too. I think the parents overreacted. This should have been a family and family relation professional problem to solve. She might run away for fear of lack of trust in the parents.

Lack of trust in the parent? Seriously?! The child is the one who can't be trusted to make intelligent choices.

Parents need to "BE" parents...not the child's BFF. It is our responsibility to protect our children. Even from themselves sometimes, if need be.

Consider this: Some of these guys this little girl thought were teenagers could very well be a 45 year old pedophile. She could be kidnaped, rap.ed or even killed.

Teens don't think about the consequences of their actions. There is scientific proof to back this up.

“The [frontal lobe] is the part of your brain that houses consequence and judgment,” she said. “So the idea, ‘If I do this today what will happen to me tomorrow,’ that's not fully there for a teenager.”


The frontal lobe does not fully develop till the early to mid twenties.

With this in mind, what would you do to protect your child?

"Tuff Love" need not involve the courts, especially if it means risking a felony charge. Her life is quite possibly ruined. She's in the public news, for goodness sake! In the event she's charged (getting more than they bargained for), are her parents planning on fighting the sex offender brand and felony charge with their money (who's punishing who?), or are they going to leave her marred by an impulsive decision she'd made as an impressionable 13 yr old?

I hope it works out for them. Her mother gave some gr8 "hindsight advice" as it were... undecided

She made a great mistake and that is very clear from what she did with her sexting. However, being a young girl at 13 means she can barely reason like an adult and need the confidence of her parents and wisdom to guide and help her through in this disturbing issue.

Something that could have been a family and professional trouble to resolve is now even on the online news headline. That has gone to prove she doesn't have the trust of her parents. We think children are often silly but they are sometime indifferent and can keep things in mind that can disturb them for a long period of time, most especially, when it comes to parenting. Children can usually differentiate parental love and hate. We don't need to emphasize on that. They can be funnily cunning but they need to be bridled through tough situations. The moment her classmate hear the news and start hitting on her in school she might likely take the hard way out. Peer pressure can be disastrous. We have seen that recently of a young girl who committed suicide for somebody bullying her online.

The parents failed her and I am very annoyed with them. I expect them to seat her down and let her understand the consequence of her action.Try to get the profession in the field involved consistently for better solution to come. In fact, they need to show her more love at this point in time. Correction can come through love not hard actions of involving scary police. It might just proved she hasn't been receiving good attention from her parents and she's looking for other ways to get one by engaging in sexting. Who really know what lead her into that kind of thing?
