Please this is not a to do list so you don't have to follow it.

The main thing to remember is that the relationship can end at anytime. It is important to know that after the end of that relationship, in almost all cases, the other person owes you nothing.

Do not give more than you can let go. We often hear people say things like I saw him/her through university and now, him/her does not want me anymore. When you help someone you are in a relationship with, give because you love them and not because you want to buy their love.

Sacrifice and compromise: This should be from both parties involved. Please if you realise that you are constantly the only one compromising or sacrificing in the relationship, then it may be best you break off that relationship.

Permanent decisions. Things like sterilising oneself so he/she can no longer have kids is your decision alone. The other party should have no input. If the other party desperately does not want to have kids, he/she can sterilize himself/herself and not ask you to.
