High Rate Of Unemployment Plagues Nigeria, What Should Be Done Or Change? by angela98(f): 12:51am On Sep 11, 2014
It is no longer news in Nigeria that over one million unemployed youths are readily applying for jobs where less than five thousand people are needed. The country is in the verge of revolution which undoubtedly will be triggered by this terrible economic menace called unemployment. However, this is a country that is always creating millions of jobs every year and the year 2013 is not an exception as Mr. President Goodluck said: “We created 1.6 million jobs in 2013,” could all this be political propaganda? Because employment rate unabatedly soars every second that passes in Nigeria. (Source; sahara reporter)

Some time ago in Lagos, I was at Ikeja going to Oregun. I met two young men whom I knew years back when they were in the university, riding Keke napep as public transportation business.
I was shocked. Even though I pretended that it was fine, that it was all part of hustling, deep down in my heart I knew it wasn’t. I just couldn’t comprehend why this university of Benin electrical engineer and accountancy graduates will be riding Keke napep for a living.
When I question them why? They said they couldn’t find a job and have been struggling over the years to get employment. I was baffled. These guys situation speaks for millions of people in Nigeria whom are wallowing in frustration because of lack of employment.
a lot of Nigeria citizens whom live abroad want positive changes to happen in Nigeria. We want improvement that will be of greater benefits to the residents. We want quality lifestyle for the residents, quality control and security in all aspects of life.
Do share your views, opinion and experiences our voice as individual residents of Nigeria and citizens home and abroad need to be heard before this upcoming election. What do you want to change?

lets speak to the government on this forum......

please do not curse or incite hatred. thanks

if i talk say i no dey vex... na lie.

SOLUTION

People should stop deluding themselves with the idea that self employment is the key to national growth.
this notion makes our government irresponsible.
what happens to
a. Heavy Mechanized farming
b. Power and Steel
c. Food Industry
can all these be fully explored by mere individuals?

the best u would do with self employment is Survive..

okay u start frying akara at ojota bustop (graduate style). u fry o.. fry o... add ketchup and mayonnaise. then after a year u open another branch office in ketu... then in two years, ur graduate colleagues start frying too. throwing u into d competitive market and depriving u of the monopoly.

some years ago.. bead making, hair dressing, tailoring and events management were big deals in naija...

now, there is an event manager in every family line.

so the truth is, we r barely surviving. goats roaming the streets survive, birds survive. .

i dont want to survive, i wanna LIVE.

There are so many complicated issues going on in the country. If the government can eliminate their "me first" tradition bearing in mind the welfare of the people. Things would improve...I have got some of my graduate relatives whom are still looking for jobs. When one of them graduated, because he couldn't find a job, he went back to do his masters degree programme, while he continued looking for a job. When he eventually finished his chances of securing a job became slimmer because employers did not only attach unsatisfaction to his age at 32 they also began to find him over qualified for jobs...now he is looking for a meaningful capital to start of any business, in a country where everyone is shouldering one heavy load of responsibility or the other no one is willing to make any financial sacrifices...loads of people in Nigeria are suffering from mental and physical stress because of hardship, lifestyle... One thing I think should be done is for the government to invest in energy and power. We need constant and a more stable electricity. So that businesses would flourish...
Secondly provide job security and eliminate corruption and oppression of the poor. We truly need a quality control to control exploitation....

First i duff my hat for your friends ridding keke, let me be sincere with you? Things will never change for the better rather it will keep getting worse if we are waiting for the government because how many jobs can they creat & how many graduate do we produce each year? The sincere truth is that Nigeria government has never & can never be sincere. If they can creat a favourable environmet like stable power supply, good road, reduce this excessive tax e.tc We private individuals will creat more jobs but we are still waiting but untill then life must go on
You can start some thing no matter how small, dirty, stupid but legal to make a mega living for yourself. When you start remenber to save @ list 50% of your earning, don't try to live above your earnings. ''Remenber God will never give you money but opporturnity when He does remenber to invest in opporturnities & not liabilities. God bless you all.

very very possible
Ajaokuta steel plant can employ 70,000 staff conveniently

thats just a plant.
imagine agriculture, power just to mention a few..

if they create systems.. things would fall in place... communal life would be encouraged

where there are industries, they would be hospitals, they would b schools for the workers kids, churches, roads... a community has started.

all those wide expanse of unused lands u see while travelling would be harnessed.

lands would be cheaper, nigeria would b better..
tribalism would reduce.. since different folks from diverse cultural backgrounds would work together and live communal lives together.

i have to stop typing, my bp dey rise as i dey type.. i dey overvexed... pheew

All able bodied and willing unemployed youth should be enlisted in the Army. The rest should be granted interest free loans to go into Agriculture and other investments

First and foremost

Job creation is the responsibility of the government, unemployed and employed people.

Solutions

1) Education
a= Better understanding of personal financial management and its impact on socioeconomic prosperity. It should be introduced as a subject for primary 1- 500 level students to help people see how they can become another dangote. This will see the rise of more dangotes

b= Science engineering and technological education especially as it focus on
i~ How things work
ii~ How things are produced
iii~ How the sales of i and ii can generate wealth.
Basic Engineering-Technology should be introduced as a subject covering points i ii and iii for primary 1- 500level students . This will see the springing up of so many Innosons and bill gates in different engineering business fields

2) Low interest long term microfinance loans should be encouraged by govt banks businesses churches individuals etc Imagine loaning a widow 1000 000 naira to pay you 37000 naira monthly for 5yrs(60months). She will have enough profit left with her to expand her business thereby creating more jobs.
Then check the multiplier effect when we have millions of Nigerians enjoying this ideal.

3) Reorientation of the working class and self-employed class that they must strive to create profitable jobs and more profitable jobs respectively because it is part of their civic responsibility. Those who succeed, should be financially encouraged like dangote until they get to a point where they can apply for macro credits

4) Tax exemptions, breaks, waivers etc should be introduced

I have many more suggestions

First what do you have to say concerning these points

you really do have some good point.. The low interest microfinance suggestion is a very good one..that way, my relative who is looking for capital to kick start his bbusiness could take advantage of such benefit... Without been choked with high interest repayment loan.

That is one major key to escaping economic underdevelopment

The question I have for you is

If you are favoured to get a job that makes it possible to save, will you save and borrow people at long term low interest rates.

Your answer will determine if I will teach a secret I was divinely taught.

I think constant and stable electricity supply is one of the key factors to expansion and growth of businesses which could attract the needs for employment of new workers. Where businesses continued to rely on external sources of power supply to run their businesses, with the high prices of fuel and diesel, it makes the chances of achieving profit very slim. At the end its the workers and job seekers that suffers. Because the organization is trying to generate profit after so much outgoings on fuel and diesel, they began to cut corners and costs to generate profit..eg. the organization will feel no need to employ new workers. they would pay poor wages, short - staff, over labour of worker i.e one worker doing supposed six workers job, exploitation of workers rights, rogue trading, production and distribution of poor quality goods, no quality control, no employment benefits for workers like job security, accident and injury insurance, limited or no proper health and safety measures for workers..

Your theory is partially right

Ghana has a constant supply of electricity. Why hasn't it lead to massive employment to the point where Nigerians will troop there for employment

Unemployment is a global problem because of the faulty 20th century notion that job creation is the responsibility of government.

This has caused many people not to play their role in job creation

Note

Jobs don't fall from heaven, people create jobs.
