Have you ever left a pet at a kennel or with friends or family, and something happened to it?

The incident happened in June of this year. In September an Arizona Sheriff called for felony charges to be filed.

The dogs were "overheated and unresponsive" when the workers found them "in the portion of the house where the dogs were being boarded," Hegstrom said. They took the dogs out back and tried to cool them off by spraying them with water, but they later died.

Hegstrom said the workers called the business owners, who returned from Florida on Friday night, and started calling dog owners Saturday morning. After the dogs died, the bodies were piled up inside a shed, he said.

"Sheriff: Story "seems unreasonable"

Sheriff Arpaio said that his office is investigating and that parts of Hughes' story seems suspicious. "It seems unreasonable that dogs could be healthy at 11 p.m. at night and dead by 5:30 a.m. the next morning as the owners suggest," he said.

A veterinarian he conferred with has corroborated his doubts, Arpaio said.

Deputies arrived to find some of the dogs' owners at Green Acres. A couple cried and hugged, as deputies used a wheel barrow to cart off dogs' carcasses wrapped in cloth.

PHOENIX (Reuters) - An Arizona sheriff on Tuesday called for felony animal cruelty charges against the owners of a kennel who he said left 21 dogs to die of suffocation and overheating while they were in Florida.

"The key issue here is the failure to provide food and water, and shelter. That's what we're basing the felony charges on," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told a news conference, adding that the dogs were confined to a very small room.

He said an investigation into the incident in June had been completed, and that 21 felony charges and other misdemeanors are being sought each against kennel owners Todd and Maleisia Hughes, and caretakers Austin and Logan Flake.

More:

Maricopa County sheriff's detectives picked apart the Green Acre Boarding Kennel when they served a search warrant at the Gilbert-area facility last week, seizing parts of an air-conditioning system to determine whether its failure led to the deaths of 21 dogs, according to court documents released Wednesday.

An affidavit for a search warrant tells the story of one dog owner after another dropping off their pets in good faith and being told the animals would be cared for like a family pet, even sleeping with the owners' children.

None of the pet owners said they were told that 21 dogs would be held in a 9-by 12-foot room.
