Where Is Freedom? Home Or Abroad? by JayOJay(m): 3:57pm On Jul 28, 2006
If you ask me I'll say north or south home is the best!  But outside Nigeria I have met Nigerians who say "that stupid useless godforsaken country, I'll never go back there!"  Yet wherever they are that are treated as second citizen or nobody.

What do you think?
Re: Where Is Freedom? Home Or Abroad? by iice(f): 4:08pm On Jul 28, 2006
Sometimes its not a matter of freedom, but of economic status or personal reasons. I think home is the best for some reasons. And importantly, freedom 2 me is something in the soul cool

LoverBwoy:

and what is "freedom" in this topic? ?

Please! There is nothing personal about this topic, so don't direct it at me or at anyone in particular. Freedom in this case is very psychological and it means freeing yourselves from self enslavement for the sake of searching for better life rather than putting your bits into the motherland and make it come out like those places you think are paradise.  This topic is to let those who think otherwise do some re-think or air their views to convince us.  If you have ever been abroad then you probably will understand the reason for this topic.  Let us just air our views and put sentiments or insults away.

Regards to all!

Re: Where Is Freedom? Home Or Abroad? by my2cents(m): 8:57pm On Jul 28, 2006
If I understand the word "freedom", then I would definitely say abroad. If it is where I feel at home, I would say home. By abroad, I mean my home base - US.

spking out of ignorance grin
Freedom:
- Am I allowed to worship God as a christian freely in the Northern parts of Nigeria?

- Do I have the freedom to say anything about the Nigerian government, ala AIT, without suffering consequences?

- Am I free to stand up to the political status quo without fear of being killed?

Just a few

Feeling at home:
- Where else can I have people address me as "sir" as opposed to "hey u" or by first name?

- Where else can I get 100% organic, chemical-free food?

- Where else can I raise my blood pressure by screaming and yelling while negotiating prices?

- Where else can I sit back and relax over a cool bottle of gordon spark amongst buddies I went to school with?

Again, just a few wink

Hmmm dolly-pee:

No offence, but I wonder:

1a) where u r located

1b) If u r in the diaspora, what you do

2) what u mean by "slavery" and "servitude"

I think I know what u mean, but I just want to be sure so I don't make assumptions. wink

@ 2CENTS; LIVE IN MARYLAND,A STUDENT N MARYLAND UNIVERSIY,WORKN PART TIME AS WELL.
HAVE U NOTICED DAT A LOT OF PPLE COME 4RM ARFICA WITH GOOD DEGREES IN PHARMACY,ACCOUNTANCY OR EVEN MEDICINE-SOME EVEN WITH A FIRST CLASS, COMING HERE @ TIMES RENDERS IT USELESS, DOING THE PETTY JOBS,BREAKS MY HEART,I SEE DEM U SEE DEM, LETS FACE IT BUT THATS D TRUTH.

dolly-pee:

without the CAPS, I heard u loud and clear grin

I thought as much regarding what u had in mind, but just wanted to make sure. wink

Back to ur post, yes I am aware of the situation. In fact, according to one documentary I watched, $30billion worth of degrees leave their respective countries yearly for the united states where they are not even utilized shocked shocked

Sure, many of our degrees may b under-utilized upon arrival, but hey, what would hv been the alternative for such pple back at home - late salaries? little or no job prospects? etc. Of course, I am spking in generalities. As I often ask pple in the states, if it is that bad, y r u still here? I usually get a lot of "ummm"s and head-scratching at this point. It may seem hard, but if it were that bad, pple wd be flowing out, as opposed to in grin

Bottomline to me (and I spk as someone who has been out of a job for 2 years. I had to learn this the hard way), as long as one is able to put food on their table for their family or themselves, it doesn't really matter what a person does. As Nnamdi Azikiwe said, no condition is permanent. The day wey u no get job for obodo oyibo, na dat day u go sabi who ur true friends be.

As always, my 2 cents

For now though, all roads lead to the US. No ifs, ands or buts. Sorry, sad some may say, but true grin

Re: Where Is Freedom? Home Or Abroad? by Nobody: 12:25pm On Mar 13, 2009
It depends.

"Home" is wherever you feel most at peace, and "Freedom" is where you feel least restricted.

It may not necessarily be at home.
Re: Where Is Freedom? Home Or Abroad? by Thadude(m): 12:44pm On Mar 13, 2009
Freedom! is for those who do right! More freedom can be acquired oversea than at home because the leaders have taken the people as slaves?
Those at home are deceiving themselves or finding a way to console their left behind situations in Nigeria.
Do you call lack of electricity freedom?
Do you call lack of security freedom?
Do you call unemployment freedom?
Do you call police brutality freedom?
Do you call bad roads freedom?
Do you call attitude of leaders stealing what is meant for the followers freedom?
Do you call election arm twisting freedom?
Do you call an imposed leadership freedom?
Do you call helplessness freedom?

Well if thats your definition of freedom GOD bless you in NIGERIA, do not criticize embassies when they grab your visa fees and refuse you a visa. They are only doing you good of making you remain in your land of freedom.
My definition of freedom is been truly free in my body, soul and mind, and having the ability to achieve my GOD given talent. America gives me that opportunity and GODBLESS AMERICA for that.

Can somebody define this tired phrase 'second class citizen'?
Re: Where Is Freedom? Home Or Abroad? by Nobody: 9:43pm On Mar 13, 2009
dolly -pee:

i believe with prayers and positive attitude 2wards ones country things are gonna get better.

Sister, I hear you. smiley

But to be honest, I sometimes wonder if we're merely deluding ourselves. undecided

That phrase "e go betta" has been uttered since the days of our grandparents, and is still being uttered today.
Let's put sentiment to one side, and be realistic - things haven't gotten better, if anything, they've gotten worse. I'm Nigerian too, and I know Nigeria is a deeply religious country, and we all pray for better things for our country.

But, it's not enough! There are too many people at the top that are more intent in lining their pockets, and censoring the truth. Imagine speaking out against the "regime" openly, what do you suppose would happen to you? Fela Anikulapo Kuti spent his entire adult lifetime speaking out against the ills of the Nigerian regime, both in his songs and activities. Where did it get him? angry

We all remember Dele Giwa (at least I'm old enough to) and we all know what happened to him!
Freedom? angry

In a nutshell, at this moment in time, there's no freedom in Nigeria.

Who ever talk of freedom in this depressing country NIGERIA" Mite either be one of our self-secured leaders. I admit we all have different meanings for the word freedom. Most of the previous posters have said it all. Nigeria is rich and yet the masses are going through hell. I NO longer believe in the statement "e go better" corruption every where. I guess we now have the best election technology in the whole world, because now, even before our election result comes out, everybody had already known who is gonna win. Such dishonesty had now being counted as technology lol. So through that will there be freedom I keep doubting if NIGERIA is gonna get better because strange things happens every day. Even our so called police as a law practitioner, now commit the greatest offence by auctioning guns and bullet to the arm robbers. Now will there be freedom Some are reach enough to buy hundred of houses in NIGERIA even in abroad. While some cant afford to buy a cup of Garri. Most parents cant afford their childrens academical expenses. Talented guys and gals waiste their talents and died without their aim being achieved. The faithful politician will never be allowed to rule the country,if fortunately he was lucky to achieve the post, then its for sure he/she will not live long. Ha Ha now what is the freedom in this land I rest my case brothers.
Re: Where Is Freedom? Home Or Abroad? by Vicjustice: 6:35pm On Mar 14, 2009
It is ridiculous to see some people associating Nigeria with Freedom.
What is freedom in a country where a vast number of people can not feed themselves?
And to the religion minded people, How do Christians feel free to live in Kano and how do Muslims feel free to live in Aba, either way, how do Christians and Muslim feel free to live together in Jos?
Do not expect God to send another Moses to lead you to the promise land, rather, see how you can remove these evil leaders and their cohorts from authority, and the country will be established in Freedom.
If there's any country in the planet that lacks freedom, that country in NIGERIA!
