In any democratic dispensation, political parties naturally evolve within the polity. Their contribution to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria can never be over-emphasized. However, some political observers are of the opinion that the activities of these political parties is fast deviating from the primary responsibilities of nominating candidates that are marketable as well as meet the yearnings of the electorate thereby inhibiting democratic advancement. Some accusations lend credence to their opinion as there have been stories of imposition, zoning, substitution of flag bearers, and fielding candidates that are not acceptable to the people.

Consequent upon this, they recommend an amendment which would allow independent candidates to stand for elections in Nigeria. They believe, it would put a halt to convoluted party primaries and also arrest the ugly incidents of ‘godfatherism’. It would also discourage the trend of cartels in the political parties that do not allow office holders to face service delivery. Indeed, freeing Nigeria from the clutches of political bigwigs would encourage voters to elect men and women of proven integrity who have a track record of service that can see to the development of our nation.

Dear Nairalanders, do you subscribe to their line of thought that independent candidature be enshrined in our constitution or should we maintain the status quo of allowing only political parties to sponsor candidates??
Please let’s contribute constructively as your inputs will be highly appreciated.
