There is a point, when you cannot walk away, when you can no longer feign ignorance and hold your peace. There is a point in the life of every man, when you have to cross the lines you've drawn and pull down the very same walls you've built. Some call it the moment of truth, others call it a water shed moment, cowboys call it a point of light. For a while, it has weighed heavily on my chest. A thousand times I've been lured to get myself involved, a thousand and one times I've exercised restraint. So I guess he didn't see it coming when he dragged me in again, unlike in the past, I held nothing back and let him have a piece of my mind this time around.
It wasn't the first time but I guess it would be the last time he would castigate me, either in public or in private, for what he called my insensitivity to such a trending issue that had generated so much interest from across the globe. Just by looking in his eyes you could see his bitterness and disdain for me. I only came in to have a drink, the afternoon sun had taken its toll on me. I needed something cold to beat the heat, but someone was bent on putting me on a hot seat and coerce me into publicly declaring on which side of the divide I stood. The room got quiet, you could hear a pin drop, and as everybody stared awaiting my response, I took one more sip and so began my impromptu defense.
Though listening to the news isn't my thing, I would be the liar of the year if I said I didn't know what was going on. From PMs to DPs on BBM as well as facebook walls, twitter handles and indeed all social media, the campaign has been intense. Every now and then I keep wondering just how we got here. My refusal to join this army is not that I care less, on the contrary, and with all humility, it is because I perhaps care more. Only a person whose sanity is questionable consults a lawyer when ill or visits a carpenter to fix his broken down vehicle. I only heeded the advice of Peter Drucker who said “there’s nothing more useless as doing efficiently, that which should not be done at all" and channeled my efforts to where I know they would count.
It is pitiable and shameful to see how people easily join moving trains without good reasons or finding out where they are headed. Very few want to be left out from viral stuffs and wear the mask of hypocrisy. Every time I see them use the hash tag (#), in my heart of hearts I can't help ask just how much would be achieved if only a handful of them will take the time to pray with sincerity. They wear faces of concern for the allegedly lost ones, what have they done for those around them? Somewhere in their neighborhood a child will go to bed hungry tonight. In their religious congregation, why are they so blind to see that little girl dressed in rags? With a little love that boy will get some education like their children. They claim to love those they know not and have never seen, but show no affection to those they see and live with daily. The sacred book calls them liars, if you ask me; I'd say they are the Pharisees of our generation. Always looking down on anyone who's not one of them. At this point I had to be more careful with my choice of words. Even though I didn't mention names, looking at the faces it was obvious some persons were beginning to take it personal.
As I sipped the last content of my glass and made my way for the door, I reminded everyone of two important things. One, there's a reason why they say charity begins at home. We must care for those around us, those we can see and touch, before we lose sleep over those a million miles away. Secondly, when Benjamin Franklin said "I've lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more proofs I see of this truth-that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid". He was only reminding us of the necessity of carrying things to God in prayers. We can carry the biggest of placards, stand on the highest mountains and raise our voices, organize a thousand protests in every major city of the country and our opportunistic artists-that have taken so much from society without giving anything in return, can drop ten albums for all I care, nothing much will be achieved. Like the apostle said, these things are lawful but not expedient. If men will remember to pray, there's a God who wouldn't forget to answer.
