@kobojunkie
its not about failing to enforce it,he ll try his best but like i said theres only so much he can do,unless you want him to stand up against virtually 99% of the politicians, force men/women e.t.c in nigeria

I am sorry but you are simply making the same old excuse, only with different set of words. Do we really need someone to make more laws and not enforce them in that country? Are more UNENFORCED laws what we need in that country? How can you sit and tell me that a government that simply makes laws but does not bother to ENSURE that these laws enforced, to the max, is a government that has done it’s job? Come on!!!

Let me say this for the umpteenth time, if it is more laws we want, we have tons of politicians in that country who provide us with so many of those each year. Heck, you go through the count, and you will see that about 1000 new laws are passed in that country, both at the state and federal level, each year. Why then are things not right ? Simple!! BECAUSE WE THROW "NEW LAW" owambe parties but forget that Enforcement is where the true victory lies.

If any government wants to create new laws, we the people, ought to demand the laws be enforced at all levels and then we can pour out champagne to celebrate that accomplishment. Celebrating the signing of a law in any state, in Nigeria, is as ridiculous as claiming government is to blame for all the problems in that country. We ought to start seeing the problem for what it really is. Lagos state already has laws such as this, who is going to enforce those laws? Na I'm we wan know.

lucabrasi:

the significance of what he has done at the this present time that he did it considering who was involved is change, ita all very well and good to say a governor can enforce and do anything but nigeria is not the united states or the united kingdom where there is already a working system, fashola didint inherit a system of any sort but crude add ons to a shaky foundation so you can't expect him to do all he has to do and then the aggravation of riling up the likes of politicians and so called "big men" e.t.c it is sad but true that only mostly "big men"in the society who are more often than not fashola's friends or aquitances that ll break the siren laws and theres little he can actually do about it save maybe specific cases, lagos state's problems don't start and end with sirens and its mis use,the police/ambulance e.t.c in developed countries mis use sirens and are prosecuted for it thoug not like they do in nigeria

Same old excuses of old that continues to lead us down the old path. We are speaking of the same country here that Idiagbon and co were able to mold so well back in those days. Please stop with the excuses and start pushing your governors to do better instead of offering me excuses should they fail to do it. You are the same person who lambasted people for propping up Peter Obi in much the same way you are going at it now that Fashola is the one on the block. I say you at least be fair in your judgment and demand the same from them all.

lucabrasi:

apart from idiagbon being the second in command,he was being rumoured to be the one actually pulling the strings of command, moreover a military regime is diffrent to a civillian regime, what fashola would have done to make sure the law is enforced can at best be in the realm of speculation seeing as he doesnt have the power now neither do we know if he ever will

Oh yeah!!! Are you sure you lived through the Idiagbon regime in Lagos? I am sorry but the army was not there to make the people Queue at the bus stops back in those days. People understood the meaning of law and that there were consequences. They chose to abide. You did not see people whinning about it back then actually and please stop confusing Idiagbon’s military regime with Abacha’s when you could not say a single ugly word about government. Two different cases here. Heck, back during idiagbon’s things were good and most lagosians who lived that time would tell you same. If I am not mistaken, mudashiru was in office and Lagos was the place to be. Lagos went from chaos to a pristine city, almost overnight and the police was more reliable then too.

For the Fashola worshippers in the house, this is not an attack on the man as I do not care much, this is simply about applying common sense when we, the Nigerian people, view the situation in that country.

GOSH I wish we were back in Idiagbons time when the law was the law from top to bottom. That man made sure that even at oshodi, people queued for bosses. I mean the psyche then was straight up IT IS THE LAW and the LAW should be obeyed. Man it was good!!

My brother i tire for Nigerians.Idiagbon never achieved that with havin two heads or 4hands. He was a man jst like Fashola. A governor just banned what he think that seems to be wrong in his territory and people are here questioning how he can enforce it. He made the ban as the chief executive of Lagos state and it's within his reach to make sure it being enforced within the state.I wish other governors would take the same bold step.

Ol' boy!! Thank you for pointing out the Obvious for those who can not understand to see,

This is total Bull, I repeat Bull excreta

Its the typical knee jerk reactionary type of government we run.
They've beaten up a 'connected' mans daughter and now everybody wan use am score cheap political point.

he should tell that to other lagosians whose cars have been damaged by these convoys.

I once had an encounter with such a convoy which funny enough was that of a Bank CEO going to work.
This was close to their Office in VI. i for one did not elect the mofo to any post besides i own shares in his bloody bank i bought with my hard earned cheddar.
If not for the fact that the car i was driving belonged to a military officer and i had 'ratings' in the car with me, una for don see me for youtube, facebook, Sahara reporters & NL receiving the 'Okere Special'.

Fashola should go and face the Lagos Infrastructure project and let the running 'Mad Dogs' be.

Re: Lagos Bans Governors, Others From Use Of Sirens by debosky(m): 8:42pm On Nov 11, 2008
I hope he spoke with his fellow governors to get agreement and buy-in into the idea - failure to do that will simply result in pointless police vs police or security vs security clashes which might turn out to be more dangerous than the previous use of sirens.

It is all well and good to make a law/directive, but if you don't carry the involved individuals along, you are merely blowing hot air or being confrontational simply for the sake of it.

I remember there being a similar problem between Lagos and Ekiti governors and it resulted in a war of words and retributions by both sides.

In my opinion, governors should be allowed to retain use of sirens, the other indiscriminate users such as CEOs, chiefs and military personnel outside the topmost echelon should be chased down first. There are afterall only 36 governors and numerous others of these siren users plying the roads.

I am sure that most people that are still doubting the enforcement of this directive do not reside in Lagos. Fashola govt has changed lagos in less than less than 18 months of resuming office. Whatever he says, just know that he will surely do it. I commend him a lot and honestly, we need such a person to direct Nigeria through the right direction.
Re: Lagos Bans Governors, Others From Use Of Sirens by RichyBlacK(m): 9:30pm On Nov 11, 2008
I really hope this is enforced to the letter!

Fashola should make three scape-goats of some so-called Generals, Admirals and Governors. Stop their convoy with some news cameramen, tell the main goon being transported like a pot of amala to come out of his vehicle, handcuff the idiot, and send his ass to Alausa in a Black Maria!

If the goon resists, all his other cars must be seized by force! And the goon must be taken into custody by force! Those irritants should obey the laws of Lagos State or get the hell out!

Re: Lagos Bans Governors, Others From Use Of Sirens by lucabrasi(m): 12:17am On Nov 12, 2008
@kobojunkie
its not making an excuse but being a realist, its about seeing the nigerian problem as a perculiarity that it is,nigeria/lagos is not america or anywherethere is a system unless you want fashola to face the traffic situation heads on leaving everything else to suffer, the fact that he promulgated a law not just anytime but right now when a fellow "big man" like him was at the other en of the stick goes against anything happening in nigeria prior to this, most ppl in his post will ignore the problem or make a speech and forget all about it,so i believe it was an awesome thing to do at this time as it is sending a message to the people who abuse the siren,we dont know if it ll be enforced or how much it ll be enforced up untill they actually start, after all kai, lastma enforced traffic laws in lagos and it got to a stage where people actually started obeying traffic laws, fashola was in government then.

im not making excuses for him,im just aying it as it is, dont the so called big men gang up whenever one of them is in trouble?we have seen it times without number in nigeria,so theres no use saying it doesnt exist cause it does, remember idiagbon was a millitary man,in a millitary government and the laws were enforced not by civies in uniform like lastma but mostly combned forces of mopol and army, have you ever wondered why the same idiagbon didint last and his death mysterious?that is for another time n thread but im just inferring tha there are powerful interests which you cannot mess with, when ibori threatened to deal with ribadu for chucking him in jail, all of us didnt pay attention to him,but was praising ribadu cause we know he did a good job, look at his tribulations now,did ibori not follow through with his threat?thats nigeria for you, sad but true
if we had a working system then fashola or any governor have no excuse in law enforcement,as or the peter obi case you know as well as i do thats totally diffrent to what we have here.

of course there were soldiers enforcing the law during idiagbon regime supported by mopol, the memory is hazy cause i was young then but i remember the people who dont use the flyover being flogged and made to do frog jump e.t.c we seem to be carried away withthe notion that it wont be enforced and already declaring it a failure, remember lastma enforced under tinubu?
of course during idiagbon time, there was
1.a millitary administrator
2.millitary/army combo enforcing the law

Re: Lagos Bans Governors, Others From Use Of Sirens by okunoba(m): 1:43am On Nov 12, 2008
good idea backslider.
I was just thinking the same. In America u have state and city police. We could have the same in Nigeria. I can`t remember the mechanism they have in place to prevent a governor or mayor from turning it into his personal army. With a little research one can find out. The federal government should give more powers to the state, the centre is too powerfull.
Re: Lagos Bans Governors, Others From Use Of Sirens by snoop4real: 4:42am On Nov 12, 2008
The list of evil deeds is endless.

The dayz of siren blaring are gone , its primitive. They bash vehicles in the process, strip responsible women instead of going to stripper's clubs, kill people all in the name of " I WON PASS ROAD, U NO GO COMOT".

Na wa for our own Naija sef, sometimes i wonder if our part of africa ruled by potbellies is different from others in color.

Somebody should convince me that we are moving forward.

Re: Lagos Bans Governors, Others From Use Of Sirens by snoop4real: 4:47am On Nov 12, 2008
Your Excellency,
Mr Fashola, these political and military mongols u're trying to tame are not dogs o, they are wolfs.

That point should be noted. If Nigeria had an equivalent of the FBI academy, world-class military training institutes, those frogs would no beta than to raise dust and noise over the place .

I won't say don't try, Try ur best and leave the rest,

Well, please let people have their say. We can not all see FASHOLA through the same rose coloured goggles as you do. For one, I don't believe in praising any person I do not know personally cause I do not know what is done in secret. I think those who doubt his ability have about 49 years worth of history and reason to. It is up to Fashola himself to convince them and that entails his actually keeping his word. I am sure you know that not everyone is gullible enough to take him at his word? My people say Action Speaks louder than words. I happen to be one of those who subscribes to that idea, and I will not trust in what I do not see when it comes to man.

@backslider. How would a state police be better than a federal unit?

no one is stopping the ppl from having their say,but i have a right to my opinions as well,i dont really get your comment really from me making a comment based on the way i saw things, you r turning it round to me not allowing people have their say, men think i really need to be careful when replying comments,

that is up to you,but as far as i am concerned, same as majority of lagosians,i believe implicitly in fashola and the great job he is doing,i dont have to see barrack obama s closet to know if he s good or not irrespective of the outward appearance, well fashola didint rule lagos state for 49 years so their cynicism is misplaced really isnt it??

and if the answer to many years of failure is shooting the man down in flames each time he tries to do something worthwhile, then he might as well start enriching himself like his fellow governors and damn the conscequences after all, that sounds so much easier, fashola is not mother theresa and he certainly will not be nigeria's obama or fidel castro, he can only do his own bit in his capacity as the governor of lagos state, not taking up yar adua's job, coupled with the challenging job of running a state where the population use 50% of the electricity generated by the whole nation and a state that is expanding every single day even while he is trying to spread resources all across the board, call me gullible but im a realist and a lagosian in the diaspora and i know what my family n friends who live in lagos say abut the man, coupled with my trips home, based on all he has done so far,he deserves the benefit of doubt as far as i am concerned, irrespective of the enforcement or otherwise of the ban, fashola has listened to his people yet again and i for one as an individual whose friends and family live in lagos, and alsways been a lagosian support fashola totally without question

Things can work well in Nigeria if worked at. This Ban is not an exemption. This is not the First time am hearing of a Ban on the use of Siren. Enforcemement has always been the issue. You dont make a pronouncement or Law and just go to sleep and expect that will work. There is no country on planet earth pronouncements or Law just works without Enforcement.

Oga Fashola You are doing great, Please we just need Enforment of this
