President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the European Union (EU) to resume the disbursement of multi-donor budget support to Ghana.

He made the appeal when the new head of EU delegation William Hanna, presented his letter of credence to him at the Flagstaff House.

In 2013, Ghana received close to 16 million Euros from the European Union.

This included a 10 million Euro Sector Budget Support for the Ministry of Health, and over five Million Euros for General Budget Support under Ghana’s Multi-Donor Budget Support framework.

But the EU for some time now has held on to the funds.

It is unclear why the EU is holding on to the funds, but President Mahama said he is optimistic the challenges that led to the freeze would be addressed soon.

President John Mahama said: “Recently, multi-donor partner support has been withheld from Ghana due to some issues. It is my expectation that as we go along, whatever difficulties exist, we will be able to iron out in order that we see a resumption of this budget support.”

He explained that Ghana needed the support because the “EU is a significant international development partner especially when it comes to issues with multi-donor partner budget support.

Ghana has abundant wealth but lacks prudent and credible leaders.

For once, I feel the plight of that nation. Just that their citizens on this forum will be forming for us and be claiming that their nation is like heaven whereas it is not.

Wow....Things are really getting desperate in Ghana.

Begging EU for money? What happened to all their gold and cocoa earnings? For a country of just 24 million people, and so many resources, they should be living like folks in Dubai.

CHOLERA OUTBREAK HITS GHANA AS ECONOMY WORSENS:

http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/content/gloomy-outlook-ghana-where-gold-does-not-shine-anymore

Excerpt:

A mere two years ago, Ghana had been hailed as the world’s fastest growing economy. Today, the country is seeking help from the International Monetary Fund to navigate a nasty economic slowdown, and 70 percent of the government budget is spent on supporting an inflated bureaucracy. Ordinary citizens lack basic infrastructure, and as a result of poor sewage and sanitation, the country is experiencing a cholera outbreak approaching epidemic levels.

Not surprisingly, confidence has plunged. Capital has fled, and the near 30 percent drop in the value of the cedi relative to the dollar this year has shaken the faith of even the most dedicated Ghanaian business leaders. Recent surveys suggest business confidence in Ghana has fallen from over 90 percent to 20 percent over the past few years. Unfortunately, the confidence problem is compounding, as seen in the recent game of domestic brinkmanship embarrassingly played out for a global audience during this year’s World Cup.

In June, the Ghana World Cup team, having lost faith in their own government’s ability and willingness to pay, demanded that the Republic of Ghana fund their appearance fees in cash immediately – or they would refuse to play in their next scheduled match. Fearing global public embarrassment, President John Mahama acquiesced and delivered about $3 million in cash on a chartered flight from Accra to Brasilia to meet the players’ demands. With the drama of reality television show, reporters from global news agencies literally followed the money from the airport to the players. The events inspired a Hollywood screenwriter to begin developing a fictional account of the relay, though classifying the film as suspense, comedy, thriller or tragedy may prove a difficult task!

I bet you right now, there are people buying ghanian real estate for cheap. When Ghana gets this loan and the economy "recovers" they will discover they dont own much in their own country. And they wont be able to do much, because the political leaders will have been settled. Perhaps our ghanian brothers need to eat humble pie, and allow Nigerians free hand to open industries in the country. I think the end result is much better imo. AT the end of the day, we are not that different.

John Atta-Mills was covertly assassinated by poisoning to put in this white man stooge Mahama who will sell his country cheaply.

Ghana is spiraling downwards in the same manner Nigeria has gone after since Abacha was covertly poisoned and white man CIA stooge Thief Obasanjo came and destroyed Nigeria.
