The Japanese electronics giant Sharp has just revolutionised the design of smartphones with the latest release of an edge-less (or bezel-free) Android smart device. The high point of the Sharp Aquos Crystal is its striking square shaped bezel-free design, with its IPS display running edge-to-edge. While the front-facing camera (1.2MP) and ambient sensor are positioned at the lower part of the device’s front panel. No physical buttons are present on the front and right sides of the phone. However, the power button and 3.5mm jack port are located on the top side, while the volume rockers are situated on the left side and a primary microphone and USB port are located on the bottom side of this impressive piece. It also features the speaker and a secondary mic at the back for active noise cancellation and HD Voice, eliminating background noises.
The Aquos Crystal smartphone is built of fine glossy or shiny plastic finish on the front panel and around the edges, while the back panel is of smooth dimple feel. The device has a body dimension of 5.16x2.64x0.39 Inches, sporting a 5-inch IPS display at resolution of 720x1280 pixels (294ppi - pixel per inch detailed resolution). It is powered by Snapdragon 400, Quad-core Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1.5GB RAM and 8GB ROM (internal storage – expandable up to 128GB via SDCard). The specs are mid-range but design is simply breathe-taking!
The sleek phone sports an 8MP rear camera capable of 1080p video capture at 30fps, enhanced audio production with Harman Kardon (audio designer) Clari-Fi and LiveStage technology with a fantastic music app UI. Other features include – 3G/4G LTE/Enhanced 4G and wireless connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi hotspot, Mobile ID suites (for apps, ringtones and wallpapers personalised functionality) etc.
The uniquely designed edge-less smartphone runs Android 4.4.2 ‘near-stock’ KitKat and is available in two colour variants – while and black and powered by an efficient 2040mAh battery. The phone is priced at $149.99 on contract from Boost Mobile and Sprint in the US and available at $230 off contract.
The only heart-break I personally have about the one-of-its-kind device is the fact that IT’S A CDMA phone with NO GSM NETWORK SUPPORT! May be I can use this medium to urge Sharp electronics to consider making the GSM versions available and globally as well, we definitely want to have a feel of it in Nigeria alike...
