Android developers based in Nigeria can now get paid when users from around the world download their applications on Google Play with the recent launch of Google Play payments in Nigeria. Google Play, formerly known as the Android Market, is a digital distribution platform operated by Google which serves as the official app store for the Android operating system. The app store allows users to browse and download applications developed with the Android SDK and in addition serves as a digital media store offering music, magazines, books, movies and TV programs.

Speaking on the launch in a recent interview with The Punch, Chukwuemeka Afigbo, Program Manager, Sub-Saharan Africa at Google said "at Google, we believe that one should not only be able to monetise their innovation but that they should be able to actually go on and build a business from it."

Currently, payments can be made via wire transfer directly to the bank accounts of developers. Currently, seventy percent of all earnings go to app developers.

The Android market is already home to some successful home grown apps in Nigeria such as Afrinolly and Form Plus, both winners of the Android Developer Challenge and the Google Apps Developer Challenge respectively.

For instance, since winning the Android Developer challenge, Afrinolly has amassed millions of downloads and has forged partnerships with leading firms such as MTN and Blackberry. It also helps foster and grow the African film ecosystem through the Afrinolly Short Film Competition.

With the launch of Google Play payments, app developers can get monetary rewards for their ability to solve key pain points for Android users locally and abroad.
