Stairs Expansion- Spyder, Aventures, Everyone, Pls Help by layzie: 10:39pm On Oct 19, 2014
Hello all,
Please advise on the best way to sort out this issue. I feel the stair case is too tiny. The house has been decked. How best can we expand the stairs without much damage to the structure.

Please ideas from everyone will appreciated, feel free to comment.
Thanks

Before I can comment, I think there is need for more pictures of the stairs from more angle and the adjacent rooms. Or You can post the plans and if u can't post it, email it to me at olawale@waynesolutionsint.net.
Waiting.....

I don't know what your house plan looks like but the stairway looks very tiny for a house. How can one bring in furniture, refrigerator and other big appliances into the house with this tiny stairway? My advise is for you to post the plan of your house so you can be best advised by experts.

My own suggestion is to scrap this stairway and incorporate another stairway from outside of the house. There are lot of beautiful ones you can consider. Check the attached links and pictures as well.....

Thanks all for ur comments.
The outside staircase looks fine but I dnt think I should adopt it cos of security. The tiny stairs is actually for the duplex part of the house.

Floor plan and first floor pix attached.

That stairs is a disaster, who ever drafted that plan should be taken to the sarkin hausawa of your community, ask for the palace guards and be given some lashes for such a negligence. Above that, was an expert approached for this work? an expansion would definitely mean an incursion into the other room (studio apartments). The stair represents a potential danger in instances of emergency that will require quick evacuation. The solution might be to pull it out, it's absolutely not workable because of the intending traffic spatial requirement for human , furniture and household items as the case maybe. When pulled down, a hard decision of incursion has to be made. Which room do I "bite" from? After the choice has been made, the stair hall should be extended to create way for a STRAIGHT FLIGHT STAIR. With this, the length can be expanded for more traffic. I called the builder when I came back and saw it. He claimed he used the dimensions in the drawing.

I just want a to fix it b4 continuing with the building. The stair case leads to 3 bedrooms and I'm just wondering how we'll move the bedroom furniture upstairs.

Change that room next to the laundry to family lounge. And incorporate a L shape stirs round the kitchen and landing in the family lounge.
Or
Remove the laundry and Reduce that same room and move it to the laundry position with it's toilet. While incorporating an L shape stirs that will go round the kitchen and landing on a lobby that will be beside the reduced room.
On the first floor, reduce the 1700mm for the stirs to 1000mm and add the remaining 700mm to make more room for the lobby. This will help sustain the room from further reduction.

NOTE: you MUST Structurally compensate or support these adjustments.

You risk structural damage to the building if you tamper with the beam. Get experts to the site immediately.

Thanks all for your suggestion.

I've actually thought abt moving the furniture thru the balcony. I want to know if there will be a better option that wnt involve much structural changes.

@micmoh, I'll also look into your suggestion as soon as I get home, on the road now.

The measurements in the plan for the stairs is about 6.2ft and while not ideal to give room for railings, it's not something that you cannot work with. Most doorway and stairs in the UK are of this measurement.

You need to watch when plastering that they do not make it significantly smaller and also find creative ways to incorporate safety handle into the wall of the stairs.

It is usually unwise to tamper with things that can affect the structural integrity of any building.

Good decision, your builder should have pointed this out so you can plan with him as he was building. Please leave it as it is.

A lofty idea so to speak but the ultimate priority of any building is the end user. Precaution should always be made for worst case scenario. In emergency and evacuation, the consequences are dire and are better imagined than happening.

Hello all I want to contribute to the ammendment of this error and I know if well considered and worked with it will work.

What I know is best for this error check if reducing any of the rooms the stair is sharing with the one that will be good to reduce from which I know that the room down can be reduced from and take either 600mm,480mm as the case may be and after doing that, make a pillar of 9cm2 end to end then chisel the decking from one end of the pillar to the other end of the pillar wide of the same 9cm with a y20 rod and makthe beam a drop beam so that you will now set your block to meet the beam before you remove the initial wall and cut the extral rods away believe me nothing will happen to it same to the stair too.

I know this very well and I have done it before and I can do it again and if you doubt I can come and assist you on a free service charge. Just provide accomodation and my transport
Just for you to see and understand it properply leaving it like this will cause future damage and probabely a disaster if proper caution is not taking.

Regards.

@ eghjosajohnny,
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. However, I've decided to leave it as it is and proceed with the upper floor as suggested by the majority.

What future damage/disaster do u think will arise if it is left this way? Please explain further, thanks
