South Africa has a population of 52.98 million (2013) we have a population of about 150 million and yet you think it is okay to compare Nigeria to them....

I will rather we compare Nigeria to Brazil or Indonesia. That will be more appropriate instead of this chest beating

Your claim about SA importing nothing is baseless and ignorant.

or rather it builds confidence that we can do more and better. Don't you get tired of thinking so lowly of Nigeria?

They never expect anything good to come from Nigeria. When we do it wrong, they are happy to talk about it. when we tried to do it right, they keep quiet or say "ADONBLIVIT"

Kindly reserve your empty chestbeating antics to your SE threads and stop presenting the whole Nigeria as an arrogant (?) nation, we know how empty chestbeating, self-delusion and utopian thinking hampers progress and meaningful development.

Absolute Antagonism renders ones intellect impotent and breeds mediocrity.

Wield unjustified Resentment is the nearest route to self destruction.

Why on Earth should a people that celebrates Lagos State achievements be this indifferent when the issue relates to the country Nigeria?

When you have no reason to justify your hate on a people or country, it eats you up until insanity start manifesting through some illogical and incoherent statements

They actually believe that talking down Nigeria is equivalent to talking down on GEJ and somehow enhance the chance of APC gaining power. To me, that is one mindset that is fundamentally wrong with APC from Oyegun the chairman to @omenka the e-warrior.

What has the topic got to do with the South East or the Igbos occupying the geographical area?

You are gradually losing your gentility.

I was referring to the empty chestbeating on this thread considering the fact that every Nigerian knows that Nigeria is nowhere close to SA in development, which i know first-hand. Therefore giving Nigerians the impression that we are at par or even better than them in any sector especially manufacturing by relying on figures alone, when even if DStv sneezes the nation catches a cold not to talk of MTN, is callous, wicked and diversionary. This particular trait is most evident in SE threads which is the basis of my referral to the region. Gentility is no excuse for stupidity my friend.

I have issues with the OP not the government. I don't see the logic in comparing Nigeria to South Africa. We are supposed to be better. We should not even be here discussing this and celebrating.

We should compete with those who are our peers

And have you visited S.A to make this assertions? Do you have proofs? Do you think the S.A gov't wouldn't have refuted this claim if it was false? I don't like people who argue blindly without any basis. Don't tell me this is how you want to sell the opposition candidates to the masses.

That is what is expected of them rather than face the topic they will try to drag the south easterners to it. You know what? It shows that they are clueless about the topic but they can't go without a fight so that they will still remain relevant.

S.Africa minister cuts growth, says economy at ‘turning point’

on october 22, 2014 at 1:38 pm
South Africa’s economy is at a “turning point” and the government must cap spending and raise taxes to tackle its soaring deficit in the face of stalling growth, the finance minister said Wednesday.
The newly appointed Nhlanhla Nene also hinted at the possible privatisation of some state assets — a move the government has resisted for years.
Presenting his first mid-term budget policy statement to parliament, Nene slashed this year’s growth forecast to 1.4 percent, from the 2.7 percent estimated in the February budget.
Nene blamed the slide partly on the global environment, but admitted that it also reflected domestic energy shortages, strikes and “administrative shortcomings”.
“The budget deficit is high, debt levels have approached the limits of sustainability,” he told reporters ahead of his parliamentary statement.
Economic growth is expected to rise to three percent in 2017, but that is still well below its potential and means the government is unable to raise as much tax as it expects — and needs — to tackle ailing public finances, he said.
It also falls far short of the growth need to tackle unemployment, which is running at more than 25 percent, and the consequent social unrest.
As a result of slow growth, tax revenue was below projections while government debt continued to rise, standing at 4.1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), Nene said.
“We have reached a turning point. Fiscal consolidation can no longer be postponed,” he said, in a nod to the ratings agencies.
Standard and Poor’s lowered South Africa’s sovereign rating to one level above junk status in June, heaping pressure on the government to better balance its books.
The country narrowly escaped a recession in the first half of the year.

And to think that nigeria is growing at 7 percent yet some ignoramus would want us to believe that nigeria economy has collapsed even that illitrate.

it could be true that our manufacturing sector trumps theirs in absolute terms. But ours is obviously still underperforming compared to theirs. Nigeria needs to invest in power and till then can we attain our true capacity as a magnanimous manufacturer.

Where do you live in Nigeria? Nigeria is heavily industrialized...i.e by African standard.
We may not be compared to SA in the Automobile section now,but manufacturing isn't all about automobiles.
