AND HE DIED, AGAIN?
Growing up as a little girl in a village located in the eastern heartland, with rain forest vegetation all around her, Nma was a happy girl. Self realization actually occurred at the age of 8 years. At this age, she came to realize that the beloved parents she had hitherto thought to be hers are actually her grand parents. Despite being their grand child, she was the apple of their eyes, she was the joy of their old age, she made them feel young again and they were happy to tell anyone who cared to listen that she is the blessing of God to them at their old age. No wonder they named her ONYINYCHI. Nma lacked nothing while growing up. At the village primary school, she was the only one who owned a mother care sandals and the then famous Bata Shoes in a school where some pupils come to school bare footed. She lacked nothing as her grand parents spared nothing they owned from her.

Her situation was made even more joyous because she had five aunts and two uncles all established and comfortable men and women. To them, she was the baby of the house and everyone’s pet. They too splashed her with clothes, shoes, toys and indeed anything any child of her age would need. This was Nma’s world of love – loved by everyone around her that mattered, and she too loved them. When Nma passed the Common Entrance and First School Leaving Certificate to attain the famous Government Girls’ College located in the State Capital, her grand parents were torn in-between the devil and the deep blue sea. Yes, Nma has to go to secondary school but away from them?

the darkest period in the Finally, right judgment prevailed and she was allowed to go, after all, the opportunity she has just got is for very brilliant pupils.

It was Nma’s first year in secondary school that it started happening-the deaths. She died – the eldest of her grand parents’ children, aunt Edith. She was the wealthiest of all their children, as such she was the pillar that held the family in place. Her death was a painful one even to Nma and other grand children in the family. They said she died as a result of complication that resulted from the illness she suffered. Some said she was killed by her father’s enemies with whom he had a land dispute with. The bottom line is that she died at a young age of 40 years, leaving all her people heart-broken especially her mother.

As expected, life went on in the family but not smoothly. Aunt Edith’s younger ones had to split her responsibility amongst them and they did well. Everyone tried hard to forget her death, but they were not able because 4 years after, the father of the house died. Though no one rejoices at the lost of a father, it was not as painful as aunt Edith’s death for Pa Matthew was an old man. He died at the ripe of age of 73 years. To everyone, this death was natural, yes very natural and so no eyebrow was raised. If they though this was the end, they were in for the shocker of their life. Nma’s grand parents had a daughter who lived in Europe then; for close to 10 years she stayed away from home. She got married in Europe and had 3 children. This daughter who had stayed away for close to 10 years met her doom when finally she decided to be frequenting home. She died in a ghastly motor accident, also died in that horrific accident was her immediate elder brother and two other people that were with them. This became the darkest period in the life of everyone. This great loss weighed

the life of everyone. This great loss weighed heavily on Mama, Nma’s grand mother. She became sorrow and grief personalized. First, death took away her first daughter, her first child, her husband and now it has also taken away her last two children.

This was when accusation started coming in. Some said that the basket of woes was as a result of ancestral course, some others still maintained that it was from the enemies of the family. As expected, suggestions came in from every Tom, Dick and Harry that came to pay their condolence visit. When the burial ceremony was over, Nma’s birth mother came to the village to convince Mama to let a juju man burry a charm in the family compound to prevent further deaths. Of course, Mama wouldn’t take that, she couldn’t leave her life and the life of her family in the hands of juju priest, but she also do not want more of her children to die. Within the space of 8 years, she

Nwadinma,
It is reading like the summary of a narrative and not like a short story.
No conversations and Igbo proverbs to illustrate the tragedies?

No wonder they named her ONYINYCHI?
What is the meaning of Onyinychi?

Nma's first day or first year at famous Government Girls’ College? How was it?

Try to read John Munonye's The Only Son and his other novels.

Nma's story would be interesting.
