What Is The Relevance Of "Political Science" As A Course.? by onihaxy: 3:37pm On Oct 25, 2014
I have been doing a lot of researches on various university courses and its relevance to the outside society.
For instance, any one who studied medicine will practise as a doctor, education will practice as a teacher.
Same with accounting, economics, mass communication and so many other courses.
Now let's talk about political science. The first time I heard of this course during my secondary school days, I had this mentality they would graduate to become politicians. But as I grew up, I made enough research on nigerian politics and I discovered that over 90% of top and notable nigerian politicians. And leaders aren't political science graduate. I tried making researches into the government cabinet and "cabals", I still found out that almost all of them aren't political science graduate. Even most of the E-political warrior on nairaland aren't close to political science. And yet, they sleep and wake in politics.
Can someone please educate me on the relevance and importance of poilitical science as a course in our society.
Nairalanders, its over to you.

As a graduate of political science, you get to teach Government as a subject in secondary school. If your dream is to practice what you were certified to do,then you would have to sell your soul to the devil before you find yourself among the political elites of this country....Sorry bro,you took the wrong train.Nothing for political science graduate in the political arena of the country called Nigeria

the relevance are enormous, in sane societies, certain decisions or policies are effected with the help of political scientist. the non integration of political scientist can be said to be part of our problem both locally and internationally, lets take nigeria's afrocentric foreign policy as an example. out of the 5 principles in our foreign policy 2 are outdated. i dont see any reason why non alignment should be one of our foreign policy when the cold war that necessitated that principle has ended over 13 years ago. also end of colonialism is part of our foreign policy while the last african territory got independence in 1994. our foreign policy is not system orientated rather it is person orientated in the sense that presidents dictate our foreign policy instead of international or local events. we have committed so many blunders both locally and internationally because of the non integration of the right people in decision making.

in nigeria political scientist end up teaching govt in schools or hanging around the "toilet" of power waiting for oga at the top. they believe knowing past presidents and governors is all that is associated with it. they hardly know when a key policy is implemented and why it was so.
