AFRICAN NATIONS CUP: NIGERIA
MISS OUT AFTER DRAW.
AFCON: NIGERIA OUT OF AFCON.
NIGERIA FAIL TO QUALIFY FOR
AFCON.
Whichever way you choose to
write the headline, all you are
saying is 'Nigeria nor go play next
African nations cup because them
nor qualify'.
As for me, that's the best news I
have heard in recent months.
I know what you are probably
thinking. Yes I'm not a fan of the
Super Eagles. You are right. But
the reasons behind my happiness
over Nigeria’s inability to qualify
has nothing to do with being a
fanatic.
Be patient, I'd explain.
After much speculations "CAF
dropped Morocco as host of the
football tournament on
Tuesday November 11th
following the nations request for
postponement of the tournament
in their country over Ebola fears."
And to 'punish' them, they were
automatically disqualified from
competing altogether in the
tournament.
Was it a wise decision on the part
of Morocco to withdraw?
If you ask me, I'd say it was the
best decision.
Put clearly, the North Africans
informed CAF that the
tournament poses health and
security risk to its citizens if it
should hold on the earlier agreed
date. And since both parties
could not reach a compromise,
they are no longer interested in
hosting the competition.
That decision was prudent and
responsible. As the saying goes
'prevention is better than cure'
Well CAF was strong-headed and
postponing the tournament was
the last thing on its mind.
Thus, the floor was opened to any
new host. One thing led to the
other and Equatorial Guinea
emerged as the replacement
hosts.
Meanwhile Equatorial Guinea,
who originally was eliminated in
the first qualifying round for
having fielded an ineligible
player, now regained qualification
for the tournament as hosts,
taking Morocco's place. They only
got about 62 days to prepare for
the continent's biggest football
event.
The consequences of that hasty
decision would soon be made
open.
Morocco, who have superior
footballing and health
infrastructure than Equatorial
Guinea has seen the
consequences, and Equatorial
Guinea shouldn't have accepted
to host this Nations Cup.
The Nations Cup attracts a huge
crowd and we still have Ebola.
While it's true that Equatorial
Guinea has already held the
competition (as co-host with
Gabon 3 years ago) I'm
concerned about its medical
expertise.
However, the central African
nation announced yesterday that
it had recruited 50 Cuban doctors
to help fight Ebola. Even at that, I
strongly question the capacity of
the country to organize it, in the
midst of the DEADLY Ebola. There
are more than 50 doctors in
Liberia helping to fight Ebola, the
virus is still spreading.
Maybe they (Equatorial Guinea)
can arrange for one Doctor per
spectator, then we can start from
there.
Left for me, the AFCON should be
postponed indefinitely until there
is no more Ebola.
Its scary to know that one of the
countries that qualified is the
west African Guinea-the bedrock
of Ebola.
And now, back to the reason
behind my joy.
I know the devastating effect the
spread of Ebola could have on a
country. Its was not until 6 days
ago that a three-month state of
emergency was lifted in Liberia.
The state of emergency included
a 9 p.m. curfew with soldiers and
police officers patrolling the
streets. Communities were
quarantined, including the
seaside slum of West Point, home
to about 75,000 people.
I shudder to think such would
happen to Nigeria.
Even America, yes United States
of America was temporally
thrown into pandemonium when
she recorded her first case of
Ebola.
Thus, the inability of Nigeria to
qualify for AFCON 2015 has
reduced or almost eliminated the
possibility of Ebola returning to
my country.
At this point I wish to say
congratulations to Morocco for
that bold decision of putting the
lives of its citizens ahead of
football.
I also wish those teams who
qualified, the very best. I'd have
to sit in front of my TV and watch.
At least, Ebola can't be contacted
via TV.
Finally, I say a big congratulations
to the Super eagles for failing to
qualify. They'd never know how
much good they've done for their
beloved country.
Meanwhile, AFCON 2015 is
scheduled to hold on January 17-
February 8 with the draws on
December 3 2014.
