I just heard that Ada in a cultural Igbo setting does not marry afar. The second, third etc daugthers can marry to God knows where but not the first(Ada). I am surprised hearing this oooo.
Pls I need enlightenment on this. Thanks.

She is to marry within her state and some places within the Igbo speaking areas.

It was traditionally true in the olden days but many people have since changed that notion
The ada is usually the most respected voice in her father's compound and her opinion is critical more so if she is the first born.
In some places according to tradition before the advent of Christianity an ada where there are no sons,is not expected to marry but to stay in her father's compound and have her children and remain as the one to carry on the family name.

well, to the of my knowledge they dont. Reasons being that they have a greater responsibilities in their father house so the nearer the better but am sure all those things have change. Ada is expected to cover the parents incase of deatth but anybody can do it

It used to be so but not anymore...perhaps because of the newly found "broad understanding of love/affection".
Now, one(ada) can marry from anywhere one finds love/peace... But DON'T FORGET YOUR ROOTs!

Babyosisi, thanks alot. I never had this knowledge of not marrying afar but i know of the responsibilities ada's play in the family. Btw,the ada staying in her father's house and bearing Children where there are no sons in the family is still happening now but by choice.

Callola, thanks dear,Igbos has numerous things the ada's are expected to do. But this things are dying out gradually. I personally dont think one should be held down of her choice becos of being an ada. Even in those days,I know that some people must ve defaulted this culture.

LyndaRoyce, thks. You are right. But what can be said of adas' outside Nigeria who has not come home for such a long time yet their money speaks well in their roots(just a thought sha.)

It depends on family. Its not culture or tradition. I'm Ada, infact only daughter and I'm married outside my tribe.
My close friend just got married 2days ago, an Ada too, she married outside her tribe too.

On a lighter note, our own Ada is a Rev. sister & her voice is very well respected in the family even if it is over the phone. when our dad passed on as the Ada she was the one that went to collect the body from d mortuary 4 lying in state & burial.

I don’t know much about Adas marrying out of state but I'm sure if he is a foreigner (with plenty dollars), your folks will accept him wholeheartedly. Why are we like this? This is nothing but pure racism!

Stop postponing, invite him to come see your folks and if they reject him, well, I’m from Anambra State wink

Granny keeps hammering in my ear, Adaobi I ga anukwa onye beanyi . Ada anaghi aga mba . And am like Wah dah hell!!

I don't want to marry and Igbo man, have told God that. And He has somehow been answering my prayer.

When am ready to settle down, we will see to that.

I am an Ada, my uncle always wanted me to marry in my village, because he said first daughters don't marry faraway. so I think the custom is still in the heart of some of our old uncles. As for my dad he didn't make it a must to marry from our village.

Nobody ever told me until recently. Besides, marrying from the same village is a 'no' for me.
