Christmas is celebrated in many countries around the world. Despite the mode of celebration, the dates and the traditions vary, the spirit remains the same everywhere.
Learn about funny Christmas Traditions in different countries.
1. In Italy there is a woman named La Befana(a nice old lady who looks like a bit of a witch) instead of Santa. Just as with Santa, La Befana usually enters through the chimney and gives presents and treats to the kids.
2. The Christmas pickleis a Christmas tradition in the United States. A decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden on a Christmas tree and the children try to find it. The finder will have an extra present from Santa or good luck for the next year.
3. In Sweden, the Yule Goat is one of the oldest Christmas Traditions. The Yule Goat was originally said to be an ugly creature that frightened children, and demanded gifts at Christmas. Later its role shifted towards becoming the giver of Christmas gifts.
4. Icelanders believe in elves, trolls, fairies, and other magical creatures. Christmas in Icelandis not possible without a visit from theYuletide Lads. Over the 13 nights, children place a shoe in their bedroom window. Each night a different Yuletide Lad leaves sweets or gifts for kids. It’s fun because each Yuletide Lad has a different personality.
5.Norwegians believe that Christmas Eve coincides with the arrival of evil spirits and witches. Witches are known to ride brooms, so norwegianshide all the broomsbefore Christmas.
6.SantaCon in New York City. To celebrate the holiday season, New Yorkers get together dressed as Santas, Elves, and other christmas characters.
7.The Pooper is probably the weirdest and funniest Christmas Tradition. In the principality of Catalonia, it has become popular to decorate the traditional nativity scene with El Caganer, also known as “the pooper.” While traditionally the ceramic figure was a farmer or shepherd, contemporary figures range in all different personalities.
