APC Members Protest Alleged Imposition Of Candidates In Osun by sixtusjr(m): 8:40pm On Dec 04, 2014
Aggrieved members of All Progressives Congress (APC) from Osogbo, Ilesa West and Boluwaduro Local Government Areas of Osun State, on Wednesday, staged a peaceful protest at the party’s secretariat in Osogbo, to denounce alleged plan to give automatic tickets to some candidates for the 2015 National Assembly and House of Assembly polls.
Displaying placards with various inscriptions such as “We built APC together, don’t cheat us;” ‘‘No to imposition;” “Aregbesola should not allow imposition;” the demonstrators stormed the APC secretariat, halting vehicular movements in and out of the premises for more than two hours.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the party had already concluded screening of aspirants eyeing the APC’s ticket ahead the December 8, 2014 primary election for the National Assembly and state House of Assembly.
But, the conclusion of the screening exercise had been greeted with concerns and protests from many of the aspirants in the race and their supporters, who alleged that there were plans by some influential members to impose their preferred candidates.
However, the secretary of the APC in Osun State, Alhaji Rasak Salinsile, urged the protesters to be calm, assuring that all their issues would be addressed by the party’s executives, stressing that it was imperative for them not to take laws into their hands.
But, while addressing journalists at the party’s premises on Wednesday, one of the protesters from Osogbo Local Government Area of the state, Iyabo Adewuyi, alleged that Osogbo people were being unjustly treated over the issue of National Assembly tickets.
She contended that “being a core APC town, Osogbo deserves a National Assembly ticket. All aspirants from Osogbo in the race have been schemed out. The votes in the town are more than many local governments combined and we demonstrated our electoral value during the governorship election.”
Another protester from Ilesa West Local Government, Tokunbo Olaide, accused some leaders of the APC in the council of allegedly planning to impose one Alhaji Tajudeen Famuyide, who is presently the chairman of the party in the local government as the candidate for the state assembly poll.
Similarly, the leader of protesters from Boluwaduro local government, Alhaji Kareem Adebisi, lamented that the party against the wish of many members had perfected strategy to return the incumbent lawmaker representing Boripe/Boluwaduro state constituency in Osun state House of Assembly, Hon. Osuolale Bello.
He said the rotation arrangement being observed by the party favours Boluwaduro at the moment, adding that it should not be jettisioned since the incumbent lawmaker from Boripe will be completing his term in 2015.
